MF 4260 sudden steering problems

I suddenly encountered steering problems. Now, when turning Left or Right, there is significant resistance and whining noise emanating from steering cylinder. Intending to replace steering unit but want to make sure this is the initial step to take versus replacing any of the valves. The front end loader and the 3 pt are working properly. FYI, I have cleaned screen in fluid thoroughly already.
