I think the new small engines burn more fuel because of the ethanol in the fuel. A gallon of fuel with ethanol has less energy, lower BTU's, than a gallon of clear unleaded. You're probably just burning off the paint they put on the exhaust system & other hot running parts. Mine did that for a while when it was new.

You might try an automotive glass shop. Its possible they could fit a piece of mirror glass into the existing frame.
