Have a JD 8440. Last season 1st and 2nd started to miss and rough getting them into gear after a time we were totally unable the use them. tore the trans. down and replaced all disc's inside the synch. put everything back together still no 1st or 2nd. although it does move a little but just not fully engaged there was wear on the drive collar and the synch drum but it looked as if the gears should reach and mesh but i think they are not.
we've pretty much ruled out cable adjustment and what not, unless there is something im not aware of.
any help would be appreciated thanks

I assume you have no 1st or 2nd no matter what range you are in. There are several things that can contribute to your problem. An accumulation of wear in several parts causes the problem. The drum and collar you mentioned are part of it. They get worn as well as the shifter fork and shift cam. Also if there is too much end-play in the top shaft, that can cause problems. The external parts; cables, shift lever, quadrant and linkage in console can be problems also, but if the lever on the side of transmission is in detent position, the gears should work if everything in the transmission is OK.
