axle replacement?

I was offered a free Troy Bilt riding mower tonight.
no idea what size, model, or age - all i know is they think it has a bad axle.
anyone know how hard it is to find one of these so I could maybe get it running?
any suggestions for where i should start looking would be welcome, as well.
