Massey 1080 Steering Problem

I have an old (75ish) Massey 1080, and come winter it is almost impossible to steer. Everything works fine spring to fall, but come sub zero temps and you need Charles Atlas to steer it. I have replaced the pump last year, and it made little if any change. This year I replaced the pump oil with ATF, it made a small change, but still very hard to steer. Any Ideas ?? Thanks, Ric in Houston BC

Welcome to the forum!

Have you checked or replaced the power steering belt? If loose or warn out, it won't want to move and will just slip causing heavy steering.

Another possibility could be water in the fluid.

If possible, block your tractor up so all steering components are free to move without a load and tractor weight. Next freezing morning, start it up and see if you can see all components moving as they should or if you can see something binding.

When jacked up everything clear, but still hard. Pump is gear driven. No foaming, no water in trap. Thanks for your interest, Ric
