How to keep your computer safe

Here's something that I posted on NetTVTalk and thought that I'd post it here also.

As many people probably know, your computer, without proper protection, is probably waiting for an attack to happen. One way to prevent this would be with an anti-spyware program, such as Ad Aware, made by LavaSoft.

The link for Ad Aware is http://www.lavasoftusa.com.

Also, another one would be Spybot Search and Destroy. One way to download it is from the Download.com website. The download link can be found here http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html.

Another thing that would help your computer out in safety would be an anti-virus program. Two of them that you've probably heard of are Norton and McAfee.

You should scan your computer regularly to find and prevent threats to your system.

Norton can be found here http://www.symantecstore.com/v2.0-im...nis360_us.html.

McAfee can be found here http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.as...=276&affid=101.

Good luck and stay safe!

I can't believe that you didn't mention AVG for free virus protection. I haven't had a virus problem since I started using it, nor have I had a cold or flu either..... :bump:

Another option may be a free virus checker like AVG, Avast, or AntiVir. I realize that these may not be as effective as a pay product, but if you have to choose between free or nothing by far free is the way to go. I have never used AntiVir, but I have seen it recommended on more than one occasion. Currently I use Avast as my virus program.

Avast

AntiVir

Also, if you are not running a firewall, ZoneAlarm is the way to go for free and paid solutions. I have been using ZoneAlarm free for a very long time now with no problems.

When I used Norton, which was a paid product, I had more computer problems than I could handle. I removed Norton from my machine, and it wrecked my Internet Explorer, to the extent that I couldn't use IE at all. I had to call Microsoft and have them fix the machine so it was stable again. It took two tries for Microsoft to get everything back to working again, and the tech in India told me that one of the biggest problems that they have is when people un install Norton and how it disrupts the system. Since I have been using AVG, no more problems. I also got rid of the Google tool bar, and my computer is working much better.

I agree AVG is better than Norton, and the price is sure right. :D I like FREE!!!

I've never had any problems I associated with the google tool bar. I've only been running the tool bar a few months, and I run it on FireFox only. IE has enough problems of it's own, I can't see adding googles tool bar to that monstrosity. :hide:

Unless you really feel you need to, don't remove Norton. Just run msconfig and use selective startup. Uncheck all Norton items and they won't run next time the computer is turned on.
