we lived on a farm in IL. every summer a threshing machine pulled by a steam engine that was just as big as Dad's would come in to process our oats. Horses were used to haul the oats to the thresher. 1940-1947. The barn yard was really noisy while this was going on.
When the picture was taken Dad had retired the steam engine, 2-3 times a year he would spend a day firing it up. He would let me steer it. In those days you had to take care of your equipment as money was tight, one trait I picked up from Dad was taking care of equipment ☺
