radio loosing memory

As you suspect, the key shouldn't mean much as to keep their memory, most radios have a direct connection that is always hot. It's either directly to the battery or from behind the dash. Your diagnosis of a loose or corroded connection is appropriate.
A vom meter will help you find it but you could just run a fused connection to the radio. The power wires are usually red or yellow. You can just tie into the memory one but I can't tell you which color it is.
Just be sure to check to see if you have constant power to the back of the radio first, then it could be a defective radio.

Mine has been forgetting what station I was on when I shut the rtv off and restart it. It has not lost the presets though.
