Brake fluid in axle/transmission??!!

I am still using the Kawasaki Mule my late Dad bought in about '91. Brakes have been bad for quite a while, then a couple months ago when I stepped on em there was NO resistance to the pedal. No biggie, I don't use it in tight places hardly at all, just around the place. And the 'parking' brake still worked. One day I checked the fluid in the transmission/final drive, and yep, it had brake fluid in it. Lots of it. :wtf:
FINALLY got where I could do things with my back, got to look at the mule, the left side of the axle was starting to show excess rust.
Pulled that brake drum off, looks like that's where the fluid went to. The retaining ring that holds the seal, which holds the bearings & axle in, fell out when I pulled the drum off. The seal was out just past where the ring should be, but I still can't figure out how so much fluid got past it into the axle housing.
This is the first time I have ever heard of brake fluid filling an axle, has anybody else?
