Drive types?

From the tyre filling thread
It should be about 25% front and 75% rear on two-wheel drive tractors, 40% front and 60% rear on mechanically assisted front-wheel drive tractors, and 55% front and 45% rear on four-wheel-drive tractors.

So what exactly is the difference between 4WD and front wheel assist?
Just one of those things I have never quite understood

Thanks

I guess this is the easiest way to describe it.

If the front 2 tires are smaller than the rears, it's probably MFWD. Basically, the front tires engage like 4-wheel drive, but the ratio is slightly different making it where the front 2 tires spin a little faster than the rears for better steering and control.

If all 4 tires are the same size (Steiner, Ventrac, Large farm tractors...), it's probably straight 4WD where all 4 tires spin at the same speed.
