I see equipment like this advertised in Ag Alert (California Farm Bureau Weekly), but never really appreciated what it was until I saw these pictures ...

Cool California.

I spent some time growing up in Lake and Mendocino counties. Nuts everywhere and picked nuts as a kid. We would watch the machinery much like you posted...They had long tongs, much like drum forks on a forklift, that would snatch a tree trunk and shake the nuts into a platform very similar to the one in your picture. You could actually feel the ground shake for the duration (about 30-45 seconds) from 30' away.

Most of the nut orchards are gone now....nearly all grapes and some Kiwi.

I too grew up in California, and my entire family still lives there. I have made the drive through the central valley dozens of times over the years and have noted the change with respect to types of crops. Seems like grape orchards go on forever, especially around San Luis Obisbo (sp?).
