Fun with RTV

Great day trip yesterday to WindRock Park just north of Oak Ridge, Tn. We took our RTV 900 4x4 to ride the ATV/Jeep/Trail Bike etc. trails on 72,000 acres of mountain terrain owned by the 150 year old Coal Creek Company. They say they have 300+ miles of roads and trails. Spectacular 30-50 mile views and amazing rock outcroppings. This property was originally mined for coal (still is), timber, and now is extracting natural gas and has giant windmills.

We took our granddaughter and a nephew her age for a 5+ hour ride over some very rough trails with stream crossings, very rocky trails, and big mud holes that created some white knuckle moments. The kids loved it. They road in the 2 Chevy truck seats mounted in the bed with self contained seat/shoulder belts.

I installed some shoulder belts up front using two seat belts bought at Advance Auto for $15 each, used muffler brackets to mount to the side ROPS and some quick (chain) links to attach to the rod between the center seat belt mounts. In addition to the QuadBoss UTV Roll Cage Organizer I had mounted above the seat on the ROPS, I installed another one just above the dashboard for more storage just for our outing.

I was impressed on how the RTV ran and handled the rough mountain trails. Plenty of power and was fast enough for our needs. It had rained over the weekend so there were many water hazards to go through. I made the mistake of taking one downhill trail that was very rough with loose rocks, deep ruts, and a steep descent into a deep pool of water with an immediate hump following. When I saw it I was already committed (no backing up) and I just knew we'd get stuck. I was already in 4 wheel drive so I locked the differential and plowed in. The front bumper dug in hard on the hump and bottomed out, but miraculously pulled through it like a champ, even with my worksite tires. My wife couldn't believe we made it either. Glad I had installed those shoulder belts.

I brought along a extra gallon of fuel for an emergency, started with a full tank and the gauge now still indicates full. So I checked the tank and it looks like I used 1 1/2, maybe 2 gallons at the most.

Today it was back to work with the RTV, cutting some trees and clearing brush.

Outstanding! Looks like you had a great time. Thanks for the pics.

I may have previously missed but can you tell me about the setup you have at the end of your tailpipe in this picture?

Awesome post. Love the pics. Just when I got to thinking I might need a RTV1140 with rear seats you come along with this idea. I love it. Looks great. We often make extra trips to haul folks down to our river dock on the rear of our property. It's about 3/4 mile away from our house. Seats like that would make the chore much easier, and I doubt they are to hard to take out when there is work to be done. Great idea. :tiphat: Thanks for posting your adventure. I would love to haul our RTV down there someday to try out those trails.

I'm thinking that canister on the back end of the Kubota is an option you see on some dragsters. It's really a drag chute! It's useful when the RTV's excessive speed gets a little out of control and you need to deploy it for an emergency stop.

I'm thinking spark arrestor or some sort or something to keep water out when submerged.

Inquiring minds want to know!

@ bczoom and chad450r:
Concerning my tailpipe accessory.

I cut out my stock spark arrestor inside the muffler and cut off the curved portion of the tailpipe to add the following purchased from jackssmallengines.com for $191.

Model 5s Quiet Muffler-adapter clamp on - part no. 5s1500h $59.95
Resonator - part no. 5s5500 $59.95
12 Diffuser Discs - part no. 5s6512 $59.95
Plus $11 for shipping

You could leave off the resonator but I got it to quiet down my unit when driving on our private road past the neighbors. The diffuser discs are the spark arrestors and I installed all 12 to get better flow even though you only need 3 or 4 for that size engine. I also bought a 1 1/2 flexible exhaust pipe from Auto Zone to get it lower and farther back. If you hit something it will give some. There is enough clearance to install it directly to the straight stock tail pipe. Go check out my picture album for a close up picture of the arrestor unit.
