I look forward to helping anyone out who may have questions/comments regarding John Deere tractors. I might not have the answers, but I'll do my best to get them for you.

A little about me...I've been trying to farm (part time) on my own for the past 5 years. I grew up (well, I never really "grew up" so I guess I grew "older") working on a couple farms - my Grandfather's and his cousin's - and the only tractors they had were John Deeres. I suppose it's because of this that though I'm not a fanatic about John Deere, I am partial to the J.D. line.
I had a J.D. 4010 CUT (Compact Utility Tractor). It was great, but I needed alot more horsepower so I traded it in on a 40 year old 4020 (not a CUT - full size) 4 years ago. My real job is as a Quality Specialist in a factory (we make products for the Military and the Airline Industry) so I only get to play, er, I mean work, on my farm in the evening and on the weekends. Because I don't have the opportunity to wait until the weather cooperates, last fall I traded that in on a used 6410 with a cab. Wow. What a difference a stereo and heater make!
I also went to Iowa (would have been cheaper to buy locally but the "away" time was needed) and bought a 1946 and a 1951 J.D. A. I recently sold the '51, but plan to keep the '46 to hand down to my grandson (if my sons ever have time to make one...!). In addition I also have a 72 h.p. Case with a loader (don't want anyone to think I don't appreciate other tractors).

Please tell us about your experiences (whether good OR bad) with John Deere tractors.

The only experience that I have had with JD while growing up on the farm is that the neighbor had one. You could always tell when he was out in the field by the put put sound.

We had a case and and a IH M and a IH A.

My brother in law farms and all his newer tractors are JD but I have not been around to see them work.

Yup, for me, a cab is the only way to go. I'd purchased 6 new JD tractors and one new CNH from the early 80's through about 2001. Due to the fact that I have allergies and flat don't like bugs all over me and being covered with dirt everytime I use my tractor, I decided that I wanted a cab tractor. At that time I wanted to stay in the 40 hp range or so. My local JD dealer told me that he understands what I'm saying, but JD sees no market for a cab in that size range tractor. So, I bought a one year old (used) Kubota 4310HSTC. All I could say was sweet! I loved the cab, but wanted just a bit more hp.

So, in 2004 I went back to my JD/CNH dealer to see what they had in the 50 hp range with a factory cab. Rather than telling me that JD or CNH saw no market for such a beast, the dealer told me that JD was going to come out with a line of cab tractors just like I wanted in a year or two. CNH still had no plans to enter that portion of the market. So, I went by my local Kubota dealer and traded the 4310HSTC for a 5030HSTC. What a great tractor! My only real complaint was that I didn't like the single treadle pedal for the hydro drive system. I preferred two pedals. Oh well, I learned to live with the single pedal and the 5030HSTC proved to be fantastic. That is until I bought another couple hundred acres or so of property. My 5030 went from being the absolute perfect size to being a bit on the small side.

That takes me to the tractor I have now, the JD5425 cab. I got a real deal on a used 2006 model that only had about a hundred hours on it. It's obviously quite a bit larger than a 5030, but still not just too big. It has a 84" JD Heavy Duty Worksite bucket on it, which is absolutely huge! I really do miss my R4 tires though. With both of the rears loaded, my FEL and HD bucket, and my 7' bush hog (or the new Woods RM990 finish mower) on the tractor, it weighs just under 12,000 pounds. That means that it leaves brutal marks in my lawn right now. Other than that, the tractor is wonderful! My 7 year old son has a blast riding with me in the tractor. It has a 2nd seat, complete with seat belt, in the cab from the factory. Since he loves it so much, I now wish I would have purchased a tractor with a cab and a 2nd seat several years ago so I could have spent more time with my kids every time I was getting seat time.

I think I may try to see what deal I can get putting together a 2nd set of wheels and tires for the tractor with R4 tires. Sometimes the R1 loaded tires are an advantage and I don't want to get rid of them. However, I think I will be able to use the tractor quite a bit more around the house if I had non-loaded R4's on it. If anyone knows how large of a set of R4's I can put on, I'd love to know. The wider the better. That would give me even less ground pressure.

Here's a comparison between a Kubota 5030HSTC and a JD5425.

Welcome Dargo. I'm glad you joined. (need my thumb smilie here). :(

Good picture of the two tractors.

For the price of the R4's you might be able to be like Bob and have two different tractors for the different functions. I bet a Kubota L3130 or maybe a smaller B model would be a nice addition and it would handle your yard work. It would only cost a little more than the R4 tires. :D
Besides, I can't imagine changing out the loaded AG tires for the R4's. Now that would be some work.

Dargo,

I was not aware you had a JD - good for you! I have loader envy...my 6410 has only the cab because my CIH has the loader.
That extra seat comes in handy, I'm sure. My CFO has to ride on the fenderwell, but she loves me anyway.

Is your loader the Quick-attach? If it is and you take it off that should help out with some of the weight problems on the lawn. Probably get you down to 9500 lbs or so. That's still a lot of weight for your lawn though. Maybe you should get a deep ripper for it to keep the compaction to a minimum. There might not be much lawn left, but the weight wouldn't be an issue either. 8~)
