RTV-- a real self starter

I was at the barn this morning and had left the RTV parked and braked with Belle the bordercollie on board. We were tending to a mama cow and her new calf and didn't want Belle making her nervous. I heard the kubota crank and thought Belle must have hit the key just right. Well I went out and the switch was already in the off position. I toggled it and it went off. Back in the barn and about 5 minutes later the same thing happens. I toggle it quickly again and it goes off and this time I remove the keys and put it in R. Now my unit has been starting in H as well as N for a good while but only when I wanted it too. I will check the wires, switch and starter as soon as I get time. I thought I would give a heads up to those of you who's RTV also starts in gear so you could be aware of this. Bordercollie

Have to agree with Peanut. Obviously a very eager RTV! :)

Keep us updated on this one. Just curious..does the engine actually start or just crank over? Have you had a lot of wet weather down that way lately that could be giving you moisture shorts?

Keep us posted..

you might wanna disconnect the battery at night and when your not gonna use it for a few hours cause if that thing tries to start andit don't start it might just keep turning over til the wires fry like a gun powder fuse .very dangerous and it could burn your stuff to the ground.

yup!! i seen guys install winchs car steroes and all kindsa stuff and they always try to go without putting a fuse at the battery and when that thing shorts out it burns like a fuse the bad thing about the main wire is there really ain't no fuse to blow when it gets stuck i mean there is ignition fuses but i seen a car catch fire from the starter being stuck and it kept spinning no fuse ever blew it just kept spinning.

That is a very useful bit of kit. Was unfamiliar with such switches, but makes all kinds of sense. And obviously really important for Bordercollie's situation.

They also have what they call :

PolySwitchesPTC

PolySwitch devices are polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) devices, which are used to help protect against harmful overcurrent surges and overtemperature faults. Like traditional fuses, these devices limit the flow of dangerously high current during fault conditions. However, the PolySwitch device resets after the fault is cleared and power to the circuit is removed, thereby reducing warranty, service and repair costs. These can be use with the disconnect switches ....

Yes , it does love to rock and roll with those new 589's.They really are great. The weather has been wet and more is forcast for this week. And... the RTV had cranked and was just a purring when I got to it both times... The battery cut off sounds like just what I need . I would be in dire straits if the RTV were to catch fire and it get to the house. The old house is almost 170 yrs old and mostly cypress so that would be like when the hay room at the barn caught fire several yrs ago ..Don't even want to think about that no hope situation. I will get one ordered ASAP. Thanks for all the help!!!! Bordercollie

My first thought would be moisture in the ignition switch. Try drying it out with a blow dryer set on high heat. Could just be a bad switch with the hours you have on yours. Dou you carry a bunch of extra keys on the ignition key? Seen that actually wear out a switch and cause similar problems on heavy equipment years back. The weight of the extra keys wore clean through the internals of the switch. Think of how many times a day you start your machine.

There is a good chance that the starter motor is continuing to spin after the self start occurs ! I would recommend disconnecting the battery when left unattended until problem is found.

Belle, looked around... nervous that maybe her owner,Bordercollie had found that she was in fact able to start the RTV. Belles plans to load up the back of the RTV with dog food and head out to Tommys place in Cajun country might have been foiled.

do you keep the rtv locked up good ?if so something you might wanna look into is a push button starter switch. install it after or inline with the regular key switch that way you can put the key in and leave it there and when you wanna fire up the rtv just push the button or you can do away with the key all together and just use the push button.

The fact that the RTV not only cranks over by itself, but also starts and runs would suggest that when this happens the fuel pump and possibly the glow plugs are getting power as well.I concur with Peanut and others on his suggestions.

Belle definitely likes to eat and I wouldn't put it past her to pull that off. I will just have to hide the keys until she can get a driver's license. She does have a tag though "Just not the same" I tell her. Haha........................ I think I will order a new ignition switch and add the battery cut off too. I noticed today that the key was sometimes sticking to the right and the glow plug light was on. I touched it and it went back in position as it should have normally. On the morning this starting thing began,it was warm weather and the RTV had already been warmed up so I would be in bad circumstances if it had been cold -- and I had not been around. Thank You everyone for all the much appreciated advice. Bordercolie
