900rtv winch mounting

ok, here goes do you guys use the winch mounting plate? or just mount the winch in the cuby? the winch looks like it will fit inside the cuby no problem. what is the purpose of the winch plate? is it just to hold the fairlead?

I put mine in the cubby. No mounting plates or otherwise required. Which winch do you have? Years ago, when I installed mine, the largest that would fit in the cubby was a 3000# winch. I believe they now have 4K# winches that will fit in there.

Although I like it in there, it may not be for everyone. If you use it a lot and/or have "chubby" hands, you may find it hard to reach the free-spool lever on the winch when it's tucked in there.

Yes, for me, I put it just where the factory and Warn ENGINEERS wanted it. If I remember right I had some kind of a plate/part left over after installation. One does have to use a bit of dexterity to lift up the flap and reach in to engage/disengage the drive. Mine is a 4K and works just fine.............God bless......Dennis

I find it easier to reach in from the front.

My Warn is in what is being called the cubby; but it came with a plate with 4 rollers making a rectangle that the cable and hook go through. It bolted straight onto the threaded holes in the bumper.........Thought all the Warns came that way..........God bless.......Dennis

i have a 2k warn i think i will put in the cuby, and make a mount out of angle iron for the fairlead.

I too thought they all came with the fairlead bracket.

PW - before you make one, let me look around on a shelf. I might have one laying around.

I just purchased the mounting plate that had that would let the fairlead bolt on.

Personally, I like mine sticking out in the front, for I know, in these swamps, when
this machine gets stuck. The front is going to be under mud & water, so I don't want
to have to get down and dig for my hook & line.
If we were anywhere else, I would like mine tucked in the front like many have ....

I have a 5000# Ramsey winch on my RTV900, and I used a mounting plate similar to yours. I like my winch extended out and easy to get to, also.

But I had this casualty: I used a snatch block and chain to move pull a downed tree to a clearing where I could saw it up more easily and safely. It was a helluva big tree, but the winch and the RTV moved it along.

I had the winchline hook hooked into the bottom plate beneath the winch ... the fairlead plate that bolts into the frame ... there are holes in that plate that appear to be for hooks and shackles. The fairlead mounting bolts screwed into welded-on nuts on the backside of the frame. Unfortunately, the bolts that came with my kit were too short ... they screwed all the way through the frame and through the nuts, but just barely through the nuts. During the pull, the bolts pulled out of the nuts. They were top-grade nuts, so I can't fault them ... they just shoulda' been longer and shoulda' had backing nuts on them.

I fixed it later by getting longer bolts and adding second nuts on the backside of the frame. I may break something else someday, but I'll never pull those bolts through those nuts. You might wanna check your nuts ... no laughter, please ... to see whether your bolts extend beyond the back edges of the nuts, and you may want to put on a pair of longer bolts and backing nuts.

I hope this isn't too nutty.

For what it's worth.

i think your gonna be really under powered with a 2k winch.the rtv almost weighs that much and if your in the mud it weighs even more.the 2k would be good for moving branchs but for helping you out of a hole it will not hang in there at all.before you go through the trouble of installing it you might wanna get atleast a 3k winch for that rtv.

i have a brand new mounting bracket and a used fairleed if you need it i'll box it up and you just cover the shipping and it's yours. plus if anyone ever blow up a winch i have a few extra internal parts and extrenal parts too.i rebuild winchs for my buddies when they burn them up.

There you go powerwagon.
Peanut has got you covered. Now, my suggestion is, if you use the 2K winch, be sure to have a strong cable and use a snatch block EVERYTIME !!!!!

And let me tell you, you might not even need a winch. One would be surprised what these machines will go threw with a good set of tire. I have proof .....

Another thing, might consider a come a long ....... ( handy winch )

If you can't find a home for the bracket, I'd like to have it ... at least the lower part that mounts the fairlead.
