Recently, we got a new guy come on board >>>> THANKS........Typically I go over to the "PROFILE" on that person to find out a bit more about them before I begin to reach out and shake hands. It's the same thing I do in person when making a new acquaintance. Think about it. When you have someone come into your home, HERE, do you kinda like to know something about them?????

Before writing this I looked at several just to be sure that perhaps this needed to be seen. Ol Baiju, for instance, has a great one with others having nothing or next to it..............Personally, I really wish folks would at least someway put at least their first name someplace in their entries rather than the nickname/handle to hide behind.

For me, filling out that profile says that one is not just part of the anonymous herd that feels they can say and do anything because NO ONE knows who or what they are. Again, we have a "special" place here and really appreciate one another. Yes, there are no rules but there are MANNERS that apply. Perhaps just the courtesy of defining a bit of who and what you are would help some of us really welcome YOU...........God bless.......Dennis

BUT HOW DO I FILL IN THE PROFILE????.........Perhaps someone can explain??????

Top left hand of the page click on UserCP. That takes you to the Control Panel. On the left side click on Edit Details. That's where you change and add things.

Dennis, if you look in the top right of your posts it shows your location if you have it filled in on your profile. You can also add your closing line to your signature and you won't have to type it every time.

I don't normally visit profiles.

I liken this place to the American Legion or someone new in the neighborhood. First time I went into the Legion, I bought a round for the bar and said Hi to most. Did the same when I came to the neighborhood.

It's easy to fit in here as well since you already have something in common with everyone that's already here.

Let's see, this group started in what, 2005 or 2006 over at Compact Tractor Review before melding with NTT so I've known some in this group for 7-9 years.

Always great to see new faces (and their equipment).

Oh and my name is Brian.

Just some random thoughts on the topic -

A user's Profile makes clear they are interested in topics that this site is focused on. As a Moderator, back in the early days we had to sort out the new subscribers into real enthusiasts vs spammers. Doc soon found spam lists that helped reduce this assault, but for several months we had to appraise whether a new member had sincere intent.

In several cases I sent a PM to a new subscriber asking that they put something in their profile so we could distinguish a new friend from the hundreds of spammers who apparently use automated software to subscribe to every site in VB's index of sites. (vBulletin is the forum software here). I think those spammers intent is to make the URL of their own site's Home Page visible to the Google spider that scours every website daily. Even when the new member never posts, if they include a URL in their profile then Google sees it and increases the apparent popularity of that site. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) consultants get paid to increase their customers visibility, so the 'new subscriber' may be just a SEO optimization campaign robot and not related to the interests of the forum.

More recently, the assault of junk has been filtered down to near nothing and a 'subscriber' joining from China or someplace and listing a Home Page offering meds etc is easy to identify as unwanted. So in summary listen to D&D and put something relevant in your profile to help define you as a good guy!

As for staying anonymous online - I used my real name for posting on Fidonet, Usenet, as an eBay seller, then in Yahoo groups, but I switched to using a screen name 10 years ago after a bad experience. Some spammer put my real name and email address as the 'Reply To' in his Viagra spam. I suddenly received 10,000 'Undeliverable' messages from that many different ISP's plus some unpleasant real emails from outraged recipients. The worst was a lady who received the spam in her State tourism agency official mailbox and boy did she chew me out. Looking at the bounce messages, the spam sender had used software that put random From, To, Reply-to, Subject, etc in every field of their spam. Every one different. They must have harvested this information from the internet somehow. After that I started posting as 'California'.

And a more sinister story while I'm at it - long ago my pre-teen daughter received an Easter email 'e-card' from a friend via my email id. The card was harmless, puppies and rainbows or something. But on intuition I researched the URL it was sent from. I found another site hosted the same place that sold lists of 'Hundreds of fresh young cuties email addresses. Guaranteed all recently verified'.

Its a big world out there, the internet isn't all puppies and rainbows. Members on here will likely become good friends, or maybe just respected acquaintances if your politics differ drastically; all are welcome. But keep in mind anything you post is visible to strangers out there in the public, forever, so too much personal disclosure might not be in your best interest.

Overlooked this part

I thought I had filled out my profile, but it was blank so I updated. Thanks for the reminder, lots of stuff there, even displays all the attachments that are posted.

Yes Dennis, you are correct. I agree.

It is nice to know who is behind the "call name" !!!!

Like some others on here. Been here back when our family was
Compact Tractor Review. I myself, have learned so much more than
just tractors, RTV's, and equipment. But about other people, their ways of
life. Learned so much about my country, the United States of America. I love
my country, I love my state, Louisiana. Hope somewhere in the years, I have
help someone within this wonderful site. For it has been contributor to many areas in my life. This site has made me more aware of different things. How the
weather in other parts of the country are. Peoples activities and the way they think, and about their investments and needs in their lifes.
This site had made me smile, made me think, made me feel good, and yes,
this site had made me shed a tear or so.
I Thank all here, for being a part of all this.
I am Jamie, my call name is " Two Guns".

Oh and my name is Brian.

I remember Zoom, It was In early '05. I bought my first RTV 900 in Feb of 2005 and and needed help..... found a wonderful RTV site called CTR -with just a few members. You helped me "put on " my speedometer. :) It came with no instructions and I was unsure about it . I was so grateful to have found a home for me and my RTV..
I am still grateful for this special place and the fellowship is awesome. People are never brutalized and talked down to. There is much respect for others. And we can say "Thank you Lord" . I don't push my opinions but you all know where I stand. bordercollie aka judy

Actually, you guys are the ones who helped me determine to make my RTV purchase. As described above in another thread about chainsaws, I do a lot of research on any major purchase. I saw that yes, there were good folks here; but really got the feeling and knowledge of how great a machine the RTV is.
lolol...........Back then the dressing out of the machine to meet one's needs was a "boy oh boy did you see what I got today" type of discussion. That and thrown in enough of "how to" help to one another.
Always, no bragging or blowhard. Not running at the mouth to build up thread count and therefore "credibility". This has always been and I hope it stays, a brotherhood.......A real one that we give and take to each other. What folks do to their machines is not bragging nor is the praise given for that work just words. Really rare on here, the internet or even today's society, to have that comradier.........Thanks for bein there guys.........God bless......Dennis

I look forward every morning to grabbing my 1st cup of Folgers and checking out what has been going on here on the forum. It has been a great source of information as well as quite a few laughs!

I'm blessed to have found this site and its members!

I'm Gary and I approve this message!...lol
