    First mow of the season

Beautiful day here today, sunny and in the forties I think, so I rolled and aerated. This morning the dealer picked up my ZD326. Apparently there's something wrong with a ground wire somewhere, but I didn't get a notice from Kubota. It will still be at least a few weeks before anyone fires up a...

    First mow of the season

I've rolled once already. My neighbor (who built the roller) also built an aerator a couple years ago. The aerator can be hooked up behind the roller in tandem. It probably looks a little odd, but it works. We use our 4 wheelers and can roll the yard pretty quick

    First mow of the season

No mowing here yet. The grass is still laying down and the ground supersaturated. And I got a flat last mow of the season.... I couldn't find the leak with soap bubbles a few days ago, so we'll see what happens when I get it off the jackstand.

    Using a trencher questions

Thanks guys. I can't wait to mess around with it some more and get a feel for it. I could have sat on it all night, but dinner needed started, and I like to eat (lol). The way it's been raining here every other day, this project is never going to get done if I have to wait for the ground to dry...

    Using a trencher questions

Well, here's an update on my getting and using a trencher  I figured this would be pretty handy to have, once I get past that "learning curve" I've read about. Clean the creek so it doesn't overflow, dig my trenches, I've got big plans for this baby, including the idea that I'd like to put...

    Chicken tractor

I've just built a coop, no tractor. I'd suggest you look at as many as you can find, then build one in your head first using the good points from them all. And of course the first question is how many chickens. I've seen some tractors that needed a tractor to move them they were so large. Here's...

    How to install a Toothbar

My toothbar doesn't get much action. It seems anything I need to dig into, I can dig into just fine without it. Plus I use my bucket forks every week and they won't fit over the toothbar. And of course there was back dragging snow this winter.... toothbars and backdragging don't mix (lol). I'll...

    How to install a Toothbar

Yep. The bigger the bit, the slower you go. I have a bunch of step bits. They sure make drilling holes easy, but in thicker metal you need to drill from both sides like mentioned above, or you'll have a countersunk hole. btw, the 7/8" was just a reference. I think I was drilling new pin...

    How to install a Toothbar

If you have a TSC by you, Doc, I found that their bits were pretty cheap and did a great job on metal. OK... I haven't boughten one in probably seven years, but at that time a 7/8" bit was around 13 bucks. A couple pilot holes and she worked fine. BTW, I stick my bolts in the opposite on my...

    Aerating season has begun here...

Very nice. My neighbor made an aerator that I use, but it only puts slits in the ground and doesn't pull a plug out. If you're overseeding that plug is nice because you can mow short, disperse the plug, and it will give you enough topsoil for your seed. We only need drawbars though, as we use...

Bill to force companies to disclose slavery

Hey, why stop there? Maybe we should tie the original colonists and any descendants to indentured servants. Are you kidding me.....

    Roto-Tilling sumac?

You're right, Erik. It's staghorn sumac. No wonder it has never bothered me. There's not much difference, but when you compare leaves, staghorn it is. Thanks.

    Roto-Tilling sumac?

That's similar to the way a landscape guy told me to get rid of it where it's in a ditch and I can't get the tractor to it. He said to cut it down and paint it with undiluted roundup. I've got one of those beaver blades for my DR string trimmer that I was going to cut them down with. Good tip on...

    Roto-Tilling sumac?

I've always known it as poison sumac, though I'm not allergic to it and used to play in it as a kid. And I've never seen any berries on it. I Googled it (poison sumac), but all I could find were pics of the leaves and red things (flowers?), not the whole tree, but what they showed for poison...

    Roto-Tilling sumac?

I've got a subsoiler, Erik. That's an idea if I run into a problem. Here's what Poison Sumacs look like, CA. (Pic 1 is the area I want to do and pic 2 is what they grow into.) They're "woody", but it's a spindly sapling kind of tree. I've yanked the bigger ones out before and they pop right...

    Roto-Tilling sumac?

Just to say, Erik, I gave that a try today, running the loader barely off the ground over the sumac saplings. A little bark got rubbed off and they aren't standing up as straight, but not a one came out of the ground. I sure would have thought they would have popped out. So back to Plan A when...

    Roto-Tilling sumac?

That's a good idea, Erik. I'd like to find a way to mulch them up though.... break them into pieces so I won't have to drag them and add to my brush pile. I was kinda hoping the brush hog would do some of the chopping so the tiller wouldn't have to work as hard, but I didn't know tillers could...

    Roto-Tilling sumac?

I've got an area out back that has gone to hell. I was hoping high grasses and such would take it over if I left it alone, but sumac has. I was wondering if I could reclaim it by running my brush hog over the sumac, since they are all around the 1" diameter range, and then roto-tilling them...

    FIRE!!

Certainly not as much fun as torching things up, but my township has a place you can dump branches and stuff. I see people hauling stuff down my road on their way to the township building all the time, but I've never used it myself. The township mulches it up then.

    FIRE!!

That's a good point, Erik. I still would rather not be baby sitting a fire at 3 in the morning, but it does make sense.
