Which model do you have? Did you replace the fuel filter also _ I'm guessing you did so see if sure the tank connection to the fuel filter isn't stopped up also.

I agree. if it did fall in the transmission, it could cause some problems- Even if the plastic is ground up by the gears, it will likely plug the filter.
