I've got a couple tailgate dents from bumping into things. I studied the idea of building a bumper but couldn't get around the dumping part. I didn't like the idea of fastening to the bed. Curious to see any solutions.

Yep, receiver mounts give you more versatility. Down side is you need to rig up either a long cord with one plugin, or a plug in at each end. Be careful about carrying your winch in either receiver. You might find yourself stuck with the winch buried.
