More about the 1020 tractor I believe it’s a 73 model it has the front and rear pto with the pto lever between the transmission shift levers the pto will go into gear now with transmission in neutral I can get tractor to go into low forward and reverse but that’s it grinds I can hold clutch down and start it in any gear and it don’t move any something is causing the clutch to not release just enough that it won’t work rite or that’s how it seems I don’t know I used the John Deere adjustment tool jd 227 to adjust pressure plate

How much free travel is in the clutch pedal? Should have about 1 inch. If too much free travel, it may be preventing you from disengaging clutch properly. Try shortening the adjusting rod to get about 1 inch or a little less. If that does not help, the clutch or pressure plate may be defective. When you adjusted it with JD227, you probably needed to remove the spring clips to access the adjusting bolts. Did you reinstall those properly? Those spring clips actually attach the pressure plate fingers to the pressure plate so the finger pulls the pressure plate away from the clutch disk positively. Also, do you have the shift lever on left side of dash, opposite side of the throttle? That would be a HI LO. A malfunctioning Hi Lo can cause the clutch to drag as well. If it is equipped with a Hi Lo, another split between transmission housing and clutch housing woiuld be required to access that. Also any pictures you could provide of clutch and controls might help, there were different variations. Lastly, I have seen lots of issues with aftermarket clutches not giving satisfactory performance including dragging, I always recommend genuine Deere clutch parts.
