2010 Rtv front drive shaft

I was just wandering if anyone that had a new model machine with front one piece drive shaft that rattles when stopped worse than the early models. From what I had read I thought Kubota had this problem fixed but when I am stopped on my 2010 it rattles very loud.

I was going to explain it better. The 2010 drive shaft does not clamp on the splines at the end it just slides on but it has spring tension to hold it tight on both ends. It still feels like it has a little bit of play. The problem is when it is idling you can get under the machine and look at the center of the driveshaft and it is vibrating 1/8" each way. You can grab it and all noise stops.

I had one in the shop recently that had an o-ring on the pinion shaft. There's a notch around the shaft that the o-ring will fit into. See if yours has this. You may have to pull the drive shaft back a little bit to see it. Otherwise I would say that there may be some play between your driveshaft and pinion shaft. I did see an article before (not sure where) it was online, where this man had modified the mounting of the old 2 piece drive shaft. He had used a washer (hole) drilled slightly smaller than the o.d. of the pinion shaft with a rubber washer or o-ring between it and the collar of the drive shaft. It provides resistance against the drive shaft with the rubber washer or o-ring absorbing the shock. Maybe one of these will help you.

Its funny that you mentioned the O-ring cov62431. I bought the machine new about the middle of May and did not have a sign of any drive shaft rattle until I got about 55 hours. By the time it got 60 I could not hear someone beside me talking the drive shaft was rattling so bad. This afternoon I crawled under there and looked and the o rings were on both ends. The front of the new drive shaft has about a 1/4" slick place all the way around that slides over the front o ring so I put a new o ring the same inside diameter but it is a little bit thicker and made that shaft slide up on there snugly. It completely stopped the drive shaft rattle and sounded like it did when I drove it off the lot. I drove it for a couple more hours and so far so good. If I just have to replace that every 50 hours so I can hear what the person beside me is saying it will be worth it. It is only a 2 minute job. I guess the front o ring must serve two purposes vibration elimination and to keep dirt out of the universal because it is wrapped in a rubber boot. Thanks for your help. Something else that really helped my machine was to add a stall mat from tractor supply to the bed that quieted it down more than I thought. Thank you again.

We've run into a rattle in the bed that came from the tailgate. It used to be metal on metal where the tailgate latches meet the bed sides. Kubota started using rubber slip-on tabs. Sometimes these fall down or off allowing the metal on metal contact again. We started using a large piece of heatshrink. Shrink it down and let the adhesive glue hold it in place. Seems to work pretty well. May be worth a look.

Our RTV, when new, the bed had a " zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz " buzzing sound. Which was caused
by the bed viberating. The sound only came when you was just about to come to a stop.
OR, when you where just taking off, it would buzz for about three to five seconds. It like to
have drove me crazy. Then, the light bulb went off, I installed four Limbsavers, the little
round objects that we use on bows & crossbows to tone down the sound of the limbs when shot in the woods. It is more of a damper thingy. Anyway, installed them, and " puff " , the
sound no longer shows up, ever !!!!

The hitch installed in my receiver will rattle like crazy too. I just put a touch of duct tape on the hitch before inserting it. Too much and it will not fit though. bordercollie

I went ahead and used the good grease and oil resistant o rings the same diameter as the factory ones but 1 size bigger on the thickness on both ends. I was reading the workshop manual and it said to apply grease to the splines before assembling so I used some lucas green on male and female splines before reassembling. That made for a very snug fit and there is absolutely no rattling anymore. I just wonder if anyone has ever used the product called dynamat xtreme to reduce engine noise. I was thinking of maybe trying some underneath the bed and on the backside of the seat and maybe some underneath the seat. If it does what they say it should quiet the machine down even more. If anyone has any input on this please give your opinion. I am glad this drive shaft rattle is gone because my wife could not believe I paid that much for a machine that rattled that bad. I realize that it is almost impossible to get all the rattles stopped on a diesel but this sure helped. I did not want to have to explain loading this thing up and hauling it 60 miles to a dealer just to fix a rattle.

I'm not sure how dynamat would work under the bed to quiet the engine. My 500 is pretty quiet but I had thought of using the spray in bedliner material under my bed and at the wall behind the seat to quiet it down even more.

Not intending to hijack this thread but I'm loving Two Guns sign. :a1:

Purchased one of these while waiting for my OEM KUbota bedliner to come in. And now,
we have the bedliner with the mat inside it. Cost is not that much at all. Get online and look.
Reason was to keep things from sliding in the back, the quieting down was just tripped across by luck itself .....

Mine rattles some but my hearing is so bad it ain't enough to bother with doing anything about it. As long as it goes and hauls and dumps that is all I worry about.

I would think anywhere that two pieces of metal vibrate together hour after hour would have to cause some wear but I am not a Kubota engineer so I am not sure. I was going to tell twoguns that I love to bow hunt but I am up here in the Blue Ridge mountains were the deer aren't quiet as big or plentiful as they are close to the Mississipi. I believe all utv's made have some rattles my brother has a gas gator and it has its share of rattles. I just really want to be able to hear that smooth diesel running it is so relaxing to me to hear a well built diesel run.

The play can cause some wear. I have one that I need to change the pinion and drive shafts on due to there being too much wear between the two. I believe that may be another reason that I am starting to see rtv's coming in with the o-rings on the pinion shafts. I does tend to offer some resistance to help keep the drive shaft running straight. They need to make the couplings on these shafts where you can tighten them, that should take care of the issue all together.

kubota rtv propeller drive shaft fix

Thanks Men for your input. 2 years later your information is again appreciated. I have a high hour 2010 RTV 1140. The propeller shaft was banging really hard at 15mph. I could only drive in Medium gear to manage the banging. This was actually good for my 12 yr old daughter, who loves the Kubota, to keep her slow. I picked up this unit in May 1013. The skid plate was bent and full of dirt. Looks like the drive (propeller) shaft is bent some. There are two places on the shaft that have a lot of wear. In combination of what you posted and what cornejo posted I have a 80% fix. I believe it would be 100% if the shaft was straight. This unit is has the updated spring assembly. When I inspected the rear O-Ring it was sheared off and the front O-ring was gone. So I just pulled back from the spline, wire brushed off the rust and added a modified metal washer (cornejo style) and put in a new O-Ring. The front needed an O-Ring only and the rear I added a hose washer too. Plus both splines received a bunch of waterproof grease. Now I can run this unit in High at 23 MPH with some slight banging. I can talk to the person next to me when driving. Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Like where can I get a cheap shaft that is straight. Kubota wants $800+. I can't afford that or I would have just gotten a crappy golf cart. I like my RTV. Thanks again.

Kubota wants $800+ **
I like my RTV.

Damn that ....

I can't see why a professional shop can't help on that fix !!!!

Never have a RTV shaft worked on. But have had many other shafts
built / re-built / fixed at this place >>>>

Now, I not telling you to use them. But there are many of pro shops that deal
with this kind of stuff. Kubota is not the only one who has or who can make these special shafts.
I would call these people and get some guide to what to do ....

......... my two cents >>>>

Update: I'm now at 100%. I know it's been a year but after fusion back surgery I am whittling away at my long to do list. I just had my RTV 1140 drive shaft reworked. A local shop cut the ends off and milled them and a shaft for perfect mating. $300. I just reinstalled with all the washers/spacers. Now can run near 30mph with no concerns.

I can't believe this thread is still going after 3 years. Kinda funny cause I had a total hip replacement in 2011 and had to sell my rtv 900 to pay medical bills. I just bought a 2007 rtv 1100 about 5 months ago to replace it. It had 1505 hours when I bought it, it has 1625 hours now. Had rear u-joints replaced at 1400. One thing about these machines, all of them have some kind of rattle or quirk, but they are by far the best and toughest machine you can buy for work. Glad to see that y'all are still runnin and I will probably be asking some more questions about my 1100. Cowdog
