Feedin Those Birds???

Sittin here in my loft looking out at the 3 birdfeeders in the front. Must be 30 doves, all kinds of junco, chickadees, siskins, sapsuckers and of course the cardinals and woodpeckers.
I have an A frame 2 story type home with glass all across the front, which gives me a view of what is going on like nothing else, except being out there in it. The birds are pretty much fed year round; but on days like today it is just totally swamped. Usually I fill the feeders maybe every other day or couple of days. Yesterday, I filled them 3 times which is pretty normal on snowy days. I get "wildbird feed" and mix 4 coffee cans of that with one of black sunflower seed.
Anyway, the birds sure are putting on a show out there and just trying to share that with you guys......God bless.......Dennis

Me too Dennis.:thewave: I also unintentionally fed a raccoon last night, He opened my trash can of peanuts and filled up- well it won't happen tonight. I love birds. I think they are one of God's wonderful gifts for us to enjoy. I also saw 2 martins in the martin box for a while... wish I could feed them something..... collie

I feed in the winter. I tried the "wildbird feed" but they seem to kick away most everything but the sunflower so I just switched to straight sunflower seed.

Every once in awhile a squirrel will get to the feeder. The dog likes squirrel (says they taste like chicken) but can never catch them as they scurry up the trees when they see her coming.

For me, those tree rats are fair game at any time for my .22. Seems if I ignore them for a year or so that I am awakened at 2 am to the sounds of "gooks in the wire" type of thoughts and dreams. They make those sounds as they are getting in the attic and scurring across the floor of the attic or get trapped down in a stud cavity. Can't have that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My border collie female is a fantastic squirrel "pointer". She chases them up the tree and then follows them from tree to tree........She ends up sitting under the tree looking up at it, while I am getting the .22.

Yes, many times the birds that actually get in the feeders kick out the milo.....BUT.....the doves, junco, finches, and others eat them like candy from off of the ground. That's why I feed LOTS of that stuff and limit to one part sunflower. So I get a pretty good variety of birds. What's really funny is the blue jays scavenging dog food out of the 3 yard dog bowls......Sometimes I put out small piles just for them............God bless.......Dennis

We go through a lot of seed all year long as well, there are so many birds here all the time. I normally buy the 17 KG bags of wild bird seed and the 25 KG bags of black sunflower seed. I also buy the 40 KG bags of cracked corn for the pheasants and rabbits. It is nice to be able watch the birds so closely. It amazes me how fast they can shell those sunflower seeds.

We have tons of squirrels here but they don't cause me near as much trouble as raccoons and porcupines, now there's a couple of animals that have a 24/7/365 season on my property.

The birds (and deer) are killing us this year with all the bird food they are eating. We use cracked corn and sunflower seeds. We found the generic bird food is left on the ground. We had 4 Bobwhite Quail show up and have been entertaining. Keeping the Starlings and bushy tails out with extreme prejudice.

When in season ( or in the bird feeder) , I love, just absolutely love, a good pot of simmered down , cooked in my Mama's old iron pot, squirrel stew!! Nice gravy , fall off the bone tender meat and a piece of cornbread to sop up the gravy juice....yum yum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still have a picture in my head of my niece as a kid, now 22, eating the meat off those bones and got them down to looking like toothpicks.. Man that is good stuff. I'm going to get some out of the freezer this week and cook 'em. :) :) Thanks!! collie

Collie how big are your squirrels, ours are just slightly bigger than our chipmunks & weasels, it would take at least two dozen (maybe more) to make a decent stew. But you sure got my hunger buds working I would love to try it.

haha Baijiu I don't know about a weasel's size but I usually cook 3 squirrels... the older the tougher but slow cooking does wonders.. I am thinking it takes 3 to equal one chicken... But, That is all my pot will hold anyway . Have one bigger but is too much of a good thing.. I guess all the figs in the summer and birdseed and pecans in the Fall/ winter make for fat squirrels.. :) collie

Wow, they are so much bigger than out squirrels, it would take at least two dozen of ours to equal a chiclken. I'm going to talk to my wife I think she has some pictures of squirrels our dog caught, most dogs can't catch squirrels but my sheppherd is so intelligent he just seems to figure out their pattern and catches them when they least expect it. He has never killed one that I know of, he just carries them to over to show us, then he plays with them on the lawn like a cat. Catch and release, catch and release until he gets bored then he just lets them go.
