Hand Throttle Advantage

Someone asked what the advantage of the Hand Throttle was. I am not an expert on Hydro Statics but here is what I understand and if I am wrong someone please correct me. Some bulldozers work from the same principle and I am very familiar with them.

A Hydrostatic Trans is like a big Hydraulic Pump (put simply) and the more power you give it the more power it puts out.

On the RTV900 the Accelerator Pedal controls both the Engine Throttle and the Forward Motion at the same time in a synchronized action. Meaning ie: a little Throttle and a little Motion and so forth.

With a Hand Throttle you are able to give the Engine an infinite amount of throttle up to wide open without asking the Hydro Trans for any movement.

Therefore when you do depress the Forward and Reverse Pedal you are giving the Hydro Trans the total amount of engine power that you have set the throttle for no matter what speed you select.

You could be crawling at the slowest speed possible but putting the full power of the engine to the Hydro Trans at the same time.

A very big advantage.

If I have explained this wrong, Feel free to jump in and correct me at any time..

The best description of the hydro/accelerator pedal function that I have read...and the benefit that the hand throttle brings..

I use my hand throttle all the time when skidding logs or snow plowing.

I agree with your description of the advantage.

Before having it, my RTV would struggle to climb some hills and I've had it stall a few times.

Now, I just use the hand throttle then hit the go-pedal about half way so the aux pump is in play and I can climb everything.

For those that do have it, don't forget that if you turn (instead of pull/push) the knob you can fine-tune the RPM's up or down a bit.

Thanks Al.... Very good explanation. What you explained is exactly what the Kubota HST tractors do..... One has a throttle lever for the engine to control RPMs and then a foot pedal to control how much the pump/transmission outputs to the wheels.....I can truly see how one could need and use such a device on the RTV....thanks again Al.... God bless......Dennis

I can sure see the advantage to the hand throttle on the RTV, but I have a question before considering one. If I install the hand throttle, can I use the foot pedal as normal or do I have to use the hand throttle only after install?

Yes, you can still use the foot control as normal or the hand control, whichever you wish. And by the way, it is about a 30 minute installation.

It seems to operate like a throttle lock on a medium-heavy duty truck.

On the RTV, do you have to completely idle it before you shift gears, or can it be at some RPM above idle when you shift (when not in motion, of course)?

still iuse the pedal as usual the throttle only increases engine speed. You wont get mo vehicle motion until you press the pedal to engauge the pump.

Machine must me at a complete stop before shifting to another gear .engine idle has nothing to do with shifting.when you press the pedal not only does it increase engine rpm but it opens the flow valve to the pump to move you. They are independent of each other but you need both for movment if im explaining it clearly.

Does it fix the "stuck in gear" syndrome??

I constantly have to use the knob on the dash to change directions. I'm in steep timber almost all the time.
