Hour meter connection

Hi I'm a new member to your forum. I have had my RTV for 15 months now (love it more everyday). I have been reading your forum for a year and a half. I find it very very interesting and informative. I think I have an answer to one of you guys questions. Running the hour meter only when engine is running. Two different times my key got left on adding 4 hours to my meter! Here is what I did.

 1.
Make up new 6" long wire with fuse holder+1/4 amp fuse, with femalespadeconnector on one end

On back of hour meter disconnect (red/yellow) wire and leave it disconnected

On the back of the Battery emblem is a lightsocket, there is a (white/red) wire (mine is marked #2) splice the new wire to this wire and connect it to the empty terminal on the hour meter

I have run mine this way the last 20 hours with no problems.

The #2 wire (white/red) on battery indicator light, comes from the alternator to the battery indicator light and is positive 14 voltsonly engine is running.

Welcome to the forum Grapeman

Next time I'm under the hood, I'll probably be applying this change. Thanks for the advise.

So far (knock on wood)
I haven't left my key on. I did put a strap (small cable) from the key to a point under the dash but that was due to my small son at the time who loved to collect keys. My tractor, ATV, UTV keys kept being found in his pockets so I had to start strapping them to the vehicle so he couldn't take off with them.

Thanks Grapeman,

I went home last night and in 15 min. had the hour meter re-wired and it works great.

My son had used my RTV900 a couple of weeks ago and I was amazed at how much time he had used it, but now I know he must have left the key on even though he said he did not. His wife and several others were test driving, so someone must have forgot.

Great tip and easy fix. I like these.

Has anyone taken the dash apart on the new X1100 series? I would like to rewire my hourmeter to actual run time, but need to get behind the instrument cluster to do so. Do we have to remove the whole "dash" to get at the cluster? Tried to take the steering wheel off, but that looks like a challenge without chewing up the plastic steering wheel. Any advice anyone? Thanks for your interest!

I tested my 2015 X900 and the hour meter does not run with only the key on... the engine must also be running. FYI, so perhaps Kubota has corrected this "defect" in later models.
