Licence Plates Newbie

I know this is likely a stupid question, I just purchased an 2013 RTV 900 and I would like to know where most people mount their licence plate? I'm in Canada so I don't know if country or province makes a difference. I can mount it on the mesh behind the cab (WOULD REALLY LOOK UGLY). I see other options but didn't want to start drilling holes.

I need to mount mine also. I dont want it on the back screen either. I was thinking of mounting it above the rear hitch and below the tail gate. I may mount it to the protection cover thats back there.

What an interesting question that I never considered, and hopefully will never have to consider. Mine is staying on the farm and an occasional joy ride down the county gravel road. No need for a license plate, but I'm certainly not everybody.

I guess I agree with mounting to the transmission protective cover.

The RTV is not road legal in Ont so no plates req'd. Surprised to hear that in NS it needs to be plated...SMV sign for back road use is all that is needed.

My 900 will likely spend 95% of it's life on the farm as well but there are so many country roads and trails with numerous lakes that are great for fishing in the Spring, you know it's hard to pass up a good feed of fresh trout. And I can't travel or even cross a road without a licence plate and insurance.

Yeah that really sucks but in NS we have to licence our atv/rtv's every 12 month. Dec to Dec.

I use my RTV for the farm only and have a SMV sign on the back screen. I had to pay sales tax but no plate or title was issued.. I met a county sheriff's deputy last week driving down the road, the bil was behind me on the tractor. The deputy didn't smile but did wave a half way kind of wave... Normally they smile... collie

Here in Georgia, it is totally frowned upon by LEO on public roads. I guess we have it good. I remember someone commenting a few years ago about having to wear helmets while driving the RTV........Anyway, one must have an SMV sign clearly posted, and if stopped you better be going to one of your patures or fields and the road is the only way to do that.........Sure wish we could go on the public roads; but perhaps that would lead to more than there is now of teens and sub-teens, or their methed up step-daddy, blasting down the pavement, with no helmet, going as hard as they can, because they think they can........God bless........Dennis

Bordercollie why would you have to pay sales tax if its for farm use?

Thanks Tucker. In Mississippi , at this time, the equipment must have a pto to qualify for the farm tax rate. I tried , but it wasn't going to happen like I wanted unless it had a pto, ...the big dogs say "the gober'mint will get their $ and come after ya for it"... collie

In Nova Scotia we are required to have licence plates and have to wear helmets at least when you are off your own property. We aren't permitted on any government roads or highways, just woods roads, logging roads.

I mounted mine to my homemade tailgate. I took the OEM bed sides and tailgate off and made my own out of wood. I have no qualms about drilling into it.

Is velcro an option? Place the license plate where you desire then use some self-stick velcro to adhere it. I'd probably add a zip-tie or very small cable/wire to one of the corners of the plate to something on the RTV so if the velcro breaks loose, your plate won't get lost.

Forgot to mention. If you do opt for putting it on the ROPS screen, I'd put it directly behind the driver. You won't obstruct your view there. Zip tie it to the screen and you're done.

Where is it Legal?

So in what states can one drive on the roads and be legal?........Limited to size of road or what?.......Pay a regular tax/fee like MC's, cars, and trucks??????

God bless......Dennis

That's a tough one Dennis.

Where I live (Pennsylvania), we need license plates but the laws are all over the place. It's one of those things you need to read/review for your particular riding area, drivers age... Laws also change quite a bit if you go into any state or national parks.

As for driving on the roads in PA, in general it's prohibited. The law basically grants you to travel short distances to get to another off-road access point.

That said, it's best to talk to the Law Enforcement office for the area(s) in which you want to ride. I've talked to LEO's about riding ATV's and such on roads and they said that in general, if you're driving responsibly, they're not going to bother you as ATV's are a primary mode of transportation in rural areas. If you're behaving recklessly, they'll identify you but won't chase you (for fear of the riders trying to flee and end up hurting themselves by driving even more recklessly). Once they do find the driver, they'll be cited.

I got my plate today and installed on the ROPS screen using one of the corner bolts and a zip tie, really doesn't look so bad. Thanks fore all the posts and suggestions.

Also in Pennsylvania. I was told by Kubota dealer that generally, and if in a rural area, you could travel back roads on RTV to go between properties you own. Read between the lines- if you drive responsibly and obey traffic laws, you probably won't be bothered by the Policia. I have a SMV on my back window screen and have not been stopped yet. ( crossing fingers) For what its worth, speeding ATV's running on the roads get stopped alot and make it to the Police Blotter in the local newspaper all the time.

In Louisiana, the Kubota is considered as a Tractor / Farming Impliment .( no other Side by Side is considered as a Tractor in this state).
Now, when we purchased ours, we paid Louisiana Sales Tax and got a Title from the state.

State says to run the RTV ( farm machine ) on the road. One has to have the
safety triangle attached to the unit. The unit has to stay on the very far right side of the road, shoulder if possible. Can run anywhere in the state, BUT NEVER ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS. Must obey all safety rules and obey state laws.
This is for moving the units from location to location, not for a everyday driving or leisure riding ....
Exercise rules just like one has to with tractors in this state.
This came from a Louisiana State Trooper.

If there was / or is any changes in the Louisiana State Law concerning the
Tractors / Farming Impliment. It happened within the last two years.

......... two guns

Post Script:
And we can also carry guns 24 hours a day in Louisiana

There is many enforcement officers don't like it. But hey, all of them don't own a KUbota RTV.

Only cost a little more to go first class !!!! :whistling:
