My RTV and turkey hunting

Deerlope

I bagged my first spring Tom turkey today and the RTV hauled it home. Man o man are the black flys ever bad. I about got eaten alive. It wasn't the biggest tom out there but it was the only one in range. I must be getting older because I don't remember that 12 ga kicking that much shooting 3 inch mags when we were goose hunting years ago. I will be looking for #2 tomorrow.

Jamie, please tell me more about these Therma-cells. We use bug repellent by the gallons. I just found a new one 2 years ago and it is the best I have ever seen or heard of. Its called bug band. Go to their web site and check them out www.bugband.net

Deerlope, All I can tell you that they work. Not many things in this world works like it suppose to, but this little contraption works. PERIOD !!!!!

Been using them ever since they came out. Found out from a friend of mine who is a Louisiana Game Warden. They use them much also !!! Down here, the mosquitos are so bad, expecially duing the first segment of hunting seasons. The bugs down here in the swamps are so bad, you cannot hardly even take a breath...... DON'T BOTHER THE DEER AT ALL....., and within minutes, you cannot even find a mosquito around you. If you don't think this thing works, just turn it off for a few minutes, the mosquitos will pack you off ....... IT WORKS, IT WORKS, IT WORKS.......

Down here, folks use them at the ball parks, family gatherings, or if you just want to sit outside and enjoy life, bug free !!!!!!!

Wal-Mart down here sell them, but I usally purchase mine where I get much of my hunting supplies, Natchez Shooters Supply = www.natchezss.com >>>>>>> when you get one, go ahead a buy you the big box of refills, you will save money in the long run ... Trust me, I use these things just about every day of my life !!!!!! Just came in about a hour ago from being outside, and had one with me then !!!

I ran a search on google last night and found them. I also found a Cabela's talk forum where the hunters had high praise for them. Thank you I will be buying many of them.

Two Guns: RE: mosquitos

I saw your post about the ThermaCELL mosquito repellant and have ordered several online this morning.I haven't seen it in stores around sw PA. I was camping several weeks ago with the Scouts and theskeetersdrained about a quart of my blood... and to say nothing of the itching afterwards.(I had sprayed onDEEP WOODS OFF but it didn't seem to have any effect on those tiny little critters. I wonder if that stuff has a shelf life--- it was some I had left over from last year.Ihaven't had a chance to try the Listerine spray technique yet.)I had to use rubbing alcohol as a rub down toget some peice from the itching. I counted over 60 bites on my legs alone.

Thanks for the info on ThermaCELL. I'll let you know how effective it is for me.

With the ThermaCell, you have a small replellent mat-pad that goes in the front of the unit. Each pad is good for about four or five hours. You will not at all times need the ThermaCell for that long. BUT, if you leave it out, the pad will dry-out. The best way to get all the goodie out of a pad during short time use. Is to keep you a gallon size Zip-Lock bag with you. If I am in the woods, and fixin' to head in, about five minutes before leaving, I turn the unit off, to let it cool down. Put the unit in that Zip-Lock bag and seal. That way if you have any life left in that pad, it will not dry out before the next days use. Also, the Therma-cell holster is a good thing, it not only holds the unit where you can attach it to a branch next ot you, but you can attach it to your belt during walking, scouting around the woods / swamps. The holster has extra side pockets to storage extra butane bottles and mat-pads. Always keep extra butane and bottles with you. For you don't want to get used to the Therma-cell, and then not have it. I have made the mistake and left mine at the barn before, and WILL NOT go into the swamps without one. I'm telling you, I don't know how we made it without them !!!! We purchase the value pack refills by the hand fulls. . You cannot beat this product.

At thevery first, I thought it would effect my deer / hog hunting. But NEVER has it yet. Killed over the years many, with the Therma-cell hanging just a matter of feet from me while I'm hunting !!!!! Makes outdoors mosquito free !!!!

I usally turn mine on about 5 minutes before I head into the swamps. That way the unit is heated up a working when I get to where I want to be !!!!

You will love this thing !!!!

Natchez Shooters Supply has the Olive unit on sale for $14.99, and the value pack refill for 19.9* a box !!!! http://natchezss.com/product.cfm?searchItem=thermacell&CFID=5105916&CFTOKEN=69847355

I've been using the Buzz Off clothing for a couple of years and it has worked very well for me. The cloth has a bug repellant built into it. I use them mainly for ticks and chiggers but they keep the no-see-ums and mosquitos off, too. I've had horseflies, horn flies, and deer flies land but have never been bitten. We don't have black flies here. You still have to put something on your face and hands if they are exposed.

That Therma Cell sounds good to keep the flies out of your eyes when you're drawing a bead. It's probably great for fishing, too. I'm going to order one, too.

I went out opening day for turkey but have been too busy to go again. We're in the 2 turkey limitpart of the season so maybe the girlfriend and I can sneak away from chores (and morel hunting) for a morning this weekend.

i agree with two guns, thermacells work on mosquitoes. i was on a turkey hunt in south alabama 4 years ago and was given one to use.i really thought it was a joke or rip off product that wouldn't really work. long story short i hadn't been bothered by any mosquitoes so i turned the unit off and within 1 minute i was trying to turn it back on. i am not sure how many i have bought since then i keep one everywhere i might need one. highly recommend!
