Name for my 'bota.

We've got our 15 year old adopted grandson with us for the summer. Our daughter and her husband adopted the lad when he was nine. He had been removed from his birth familly some years previously to save him from a horribly abusive situation (every kind of abuse you can think of). As you might expect, he has some issues. But he is making progress and our daughter and her husband are nothing if not loving and committed to him. But not easy! So he is staying with us for almost two months, giving our daughter and husband some much needed respite.

We have been managing OK--much better than I dared to hope, in fact. Anyway, all that to say that he has discovered that he really likes driving the Kubota, which I let him do under my supervision and to help me out with chores and such. While driving around we have been brainstorming possible names. The one that stuck is 'Katchup', growing out of his observation that it could not 'catch up' with any other vehicle we have on the property. (Not exactly true--the Case 580C backhoe is no speed demon, either. But the boy was not thinking of the backhoe.) So, Katchup the Kubota. A bit weird, but seems to be sticking.

Onfoot, my hat goes off to your daughter and her husband for taking such a job. And to you, a man of who you are, spending the time to show and tell him the values of life and the way things reallyshould bein this loving world. It takes special people to take that responsibility....Real Special People !!!! I will keep all of you, and your grandson, in our prayers ....

Good folks like ya'll... That is what makes a difference in this world. I am glad that this young fellow has a good chance of a normal life with the positive influence of your family, He will remember the 'bota ..aka Katchup, and times spent at a good home with such good role models, Bordercollie

Appreciate your thoughts and prayers! I am grateful for my wife, as she is infinitely more patient than I am and helps keep me reminded of what is important and what I need to let slip by. But the lad and I are managing to have some good times which I trust will build some lasting memories for him--Katchup the Kubota being a key player, it seems. We are going camping this weekend and going to do some gold panning at a friend's gold claim. Will let you know if we strike it rich! :-)

Not to worry--they are part of the gear.

Just reported on the local TV that there was forestfire smoke in Whitehorse..Hope all is well in your vicinity. BTW its nice to see some of these kids getting a chance.. My hat is off to you and your family.

So we made the news, eh? Yep, there is a lot of smoke--been pretty thick for the past several days. There are forest fires to the north and south and west. And the woods are tinder dry. Tonight they are calling for thunder and lightning--so good liklihood of more fires. Extra crews have been brought in from BC just to be prepared.

So far no settlements are being threatened. But it is a concerning time.

Since getting mine, various nicknames have come and gone but none seemed to stick. Thanks to 2Guns on another thread, the name that seems to be sticking is "The Turtle". It even has a turtle like appearance. Funny how we like to name our toys. My Lazer red mustang has been known as SCARLET. No one in the family ever refers to her as the mustang.

'The Turtle' is good. Not unrelated, in a round-about way, to our name of Katchup. My grader was known as Annie. Never got around to naming my backhoe. My old red Landcruiser went by Tootsie. Sometimes it takes awhile to come up with the right name--need to learn the personality.
