New Three Legged Dog Owner

Thanks to Two Guns for refering this site to me.

I have been researching UTV's for a while and have been on the "other site". Boy, one can take some abuse over there. Anyway, after much research the wife and I went last Friday and got a silver RTV 900. It showed up here today, all three legs [;)]

It was very cold here today but we did manage to get out and put about an hour on it. Could have used the cab and heater of the 1100 today.

What a machine. It is going to come in real handy. I didn't do any work today, only joy riding (in the wind and cold) if that is what you can call it, but I have a couple of stalls that need stripped and some wood to get off the hill for the furnace so we will give it a work out.

I can see this is a much friendlier site (maybe a little biased) but very informative.

Happy you made the trip. Everybody here loves the RTV !!!!

Now, your next step is, to tell everbody what you are going to name your new silver machine. Just about everybody here has a name for his / her RTV. bczoom calls his " Kubaby ", mine is the " Iron Boar " , and there are so many others out there, so give it a shot, & let it stick >>>>

Then, tell the big plans you have for the machine, and what you plan on adding for accessories. The real fun kicks in putting on the add-ons ~~

I know what you mean about the 1100 with heat., bet them things are nice >>> Went hunting today, harvested another deer, and like to froze to death after dark, getting out of the swamps headed back to the barns. Wind was about to cut me in half... So cold, couldn't hardly feel the trigger, but managed .... Don't know what I would do without my windshield.

What tires comes with the Special Edition ?

I didn't realize it got cold down there[;)].

The wind was blowing about 15 to 20 and with the chill factor it was a little below zero herethis afternoon. I definately will be putting a wind shield on it.

I had them put the ATV tires on for the time being but will go with something a little beefier (think that is a word) soon.

I am not sure if I can find a tire that will fit the "fancy wheels" that came with it but that would be nice. The wife will probably not like it if I were to take them off.

Oh yes, it gets cold >>> Themometer shows 26 degrees right now, and darn wind in about to freeze us to death. Just don't seem to get cold enough when it's time to rain, so it can turn to snow, so I can hunt in the woods and run in the snow like some other folks on this site. Tired of rolling in the sloppy mud all the time to kill deer. Makes me feel like a misfit ( Ha-Ha )

And there is a flip side of thisweather, down in Louisiana, went it's hot, man it's HOT !!!!

The temp down here is really crazy, can be 25-30 degrees for about three days, then, BAM, thermometer goes back up for a few, then back down again. No really way to state it, other than it's crazy... I believe that's why folks get sick with a cold or flu so quickly. Don't ever know how to dress..

What makes our cold so COLD, is the humidity is so, so, bad, cannot get enough clothes on , the cold just goes threw them... It's a different feeling than they have up north. Years ago, when I used to make some trips up in the north, northeast ,& northwest. Yes, it was cold there to, but seemed to be a different cold >>>>>>

Personally, I love the cold, makes deer move more !!!![:O] [:O][:O]

YES *YES * YES >>>>

There are tires that will fit them " fancy wheels " >>> Sell 'em everyday at ATO !!!!

Great prices & I think, they have free shipping !!!

Well just to let you know, the temperature here in Minnesota was at -4 here without the windshield factor. With the wind it is about -25! The 25-30 degrees that you have sounds likc a heat wave for me! Cold front moved in about a day ago. It is going to warm up again this weekend - hang in there. And yes, take it from me, a windshield on the RTV is a good idea in cold weather.

Just checked it , 21 degrees here in Louisiana >>>>>> 6:15am

Just checked the online weather channel, suppose to rise up in the 70's Saturday or Sunday >> [*-)]

Congrats on your new RTV!!! You'll be happy you went with the SE as that's what Mrs. rap wanted.
If/as I recall, you're in PA. North East? Anyway, a windshield will be a key item to get. As already noted, it's needed in the winter to keep down the windchill but you'll also appreciate it in the summer to keep the bugs off your teeth do to the big smile you'll always be wearing.

I pretty much gave up on that site. If a few members over there would drop the "3-legged" issue (as it seems that's the only thing they ever say about the RTV, and they say it over and over and over in every thread), it would help.
I can see this is a much friendlier site (maybe a little biased) but very informative.
I wouldn't say this site is biased. I'd say it's the site people come to AFTER they got their RTV. We've had little requests for brand comparisons (but do have some good threads to compare a Ranger to a RTV and depending on needs, the Ranger may be the preferred machine). Brand bashing doesn't occur on this site.
Once a person gets their UTV, they then migrate to a forum where brand/model specifics are discussed. For the RTV, this is the site. (For Rangers, it's normally PRC; Rhino's, UORC or RSBS...). To my knowledge, the JD owners don't have a dedicated area so the people I know just troll around.

I am actually more centrally located. About 4 miles south of I80 exit 120.

I did get alot of good information off of the other site. Actually, some of the bashing of the RTV was what really informed me and steered me more in that direction. It seems some posters are there with a grudge and no matter what is said they have a come back even if it makes no sense. Anyway, I got what I feel is the best UTV on the market for the purpose I have for it.

The grandson, who is 4, just came to me and asked if we "could ride that machine, the Kubota"? It is 3 degrees here this morning. I asked if we could wait a little while until it warms up and he informed me he has school today (pre-school) so we have to do it now[:D]

OK, that puts us pretty close. I'm about 2 hours to your West.

Ahhh, kids. Get used to them riding. I know I can't keep mine off. Does yours have a middle seatbelt? Mine didn't and with 2 kids, I made it a point to put a middle belt in place. I believe mine was out of the rear, middle seat out of a Toyota. The grey is a pretty close match.

No middle seat belt. We did get out again late this afternoon for a little ride. I buckled him in with me in my belt but have to get something else rigged up. I haven't taken the time to look how I might do that yet but will figure something out.

Glad to hear you're getting some time on the new member of the crew, and yes this is a much friendlier place, good hands on info here if you need to know what the RTV will do. Here I am trying to justify the money to get a 900 and with all the snow pictures and the temp outside the last couple of days in the teens, the 1100 is looking more tempting all the time.

I did the same. I was months trying to justify getting this machine. I am a great procrastanator(not sure if that is spelled right but you get the idea). I am glad I finally made the decision I did. I looked at the 1100 and the heat and a/c would have been nice but I will not spend that much time in it/on it to justify the extra $'s. The a/c not so big a deal but the heat sure would be nice when it is 0 out there. Oh well, I have to have the heavy cloths anyway, so I will just dress a little warmer.

I will get a windshied though. I think that will be a great improvement getting the air off my face and hands. My fingers have been frost bitten so many times it takes very little to get them aching. Even with warm gloves they get cold.

rapracing, You've been mentioning a windshield, I thought you might be want to consider an alternative to the Kubota glass one. I recently made my own from a product called Makrolon, which is a polycarbonate material simular to GE Lexan, supposedly not as good but has been working great for me so far and about 1/2 the price of Lexan. It was very easy to work with, cuts just like wood only you must take care not to scratch it when cutting or drilling. I bought 1/4 inch thick Makrolon from a local glass co., used an acrylic hinge I bought from a mail order supply house called McMaster-Carr Co. , and I used 6 of the U-bolts and rubber insulators from Kubota which are used to attach the plastic roof. The total cost has been about $200.00. I only use the windshield in the winter for plowing etc., and all of my trails are cut back so I don't have to worry about scratches so much. So far it has worked great at breaking the wind. I took a few pictures and i'll try to attach them. If you consider it i would be happy to help. jdh1
