I see there are several threads about hydraulic problems with the old 2040's.
Mine is a 1980, closed center, 4wd, power syncron and hydr pto. It's made in Germany, and I live in Norway. It has a front loader, and my problem dates back almost, well forever. But now something has happened!
Three years ago I let the local agricultural mechanics school have it for a winter, to try and find out what the problem was. I have always had a bit of jerky hydraulics, and it was getting worse. Most noticeable when using the front loader, or 3 pt. Even a log splitter would not go smoothly.
Before they started working on it, it had also happened that the problem would get worse when the oil was hot, and also I would get a warning light at low rpms about trans oil pressure.
The school took it apart, measured the inside pump and found that to be within specs. Found nothing else wrong. But they did not do a very good job, among other things they missed one pipe inside when they put it back together, resulting in a total loss of oil pressure when I got it home. So, it had to go back next winter.
This time they fixed the pipe they screwed up last time, and spent a lot of time troubleshooting. I got it back, and this time it was better. It seems that my only problem until yesterday was the jerking, which I suspect is the front pump that has one or more valves that are binding or something wrong with. I have had it apart one time, and found two broken springs. I replaced all eight valves and springs, but even if the jerking improved it was not ok.
However, the other day I was using a log splitter, and usually the jerking had got a bit better as the oil warmed up. But not so much this time. Suddenly I lost all oil pressure. It's totally useless, and I have no oil for steering or anything. But if I engage the PTO handle it gets better. Now I can use it as before, even if it seems to not have the same amount of oil coming to the front pump. If I disengage the PTO I loose most of the oil unless I rev it really hard.
I can hear a noise if I open the oil filler cap on the back, which in my head seems to be oil under pressure escaping from somewhere inside. I fear that a pipe or coupling is broken inside.
I suppose I have to split it to get to the pipes inside? My problem is that I have nowhere to do this, with a roof and and a concrete floor.... so I'm in a bind here.
Any ideas on what is wrong? Suppose it has something to do with the pto. Also the PTO brake is not working. It quit on me this winter, after the scool replaced it. Before that it has not been working for years, and not really bothered me.
Thank you
Stefan
