rtv 1100 noise

Hi everyone I am new here. I have a 2010 Kubota 1100 with about 180 hours on it. I have a noise that shows up at high speed in high range and no where else. If I run it in low or medium range or 4wd there is no noise. The noise sounds similar to a rod knocking in the motor (I know that's not it of course). I have had it into the dealer and they naturally couldnt find anything. I have wiggled all of the shafts and everything seems fine. I am having a terrible time pin pointing the location of the noise too, it sounds like it comes from all over the place. Does anyone have any input? Thanks in advance.

Since it is in high gear would look at loose wheel lugs, bent rim or bad tire.
Out of balance tire could make things shake.
The knock is what throws me off. Look at all your joints front and rear since a knock is more likely there I would think. Check muffler shield or exhaust shield might be making noise hitting the frame or the exhaust system somewere.

Try jacking up the rear end , Put it in geer, Then check the u-joints by rotating the tire forward and backware on each side. Do both sides and see if there is excess play.

The previous suggestions are what I would look at first and then, if I didn't find it, I would look at the carrier bearing if you have that type of drive shaft on the 1100. It is where the front and rear shafts meet. It will vibrate and ride like a log wagon when it gets out of sorts. I doubt that is it but I would take a look if everything else checked out.The ujoints- if it were them, need to be caught early, otherwise it could cause even more damage like having to buy the shafts they're on etc. bordercollie

Welcome to the forum deadshort !!!!

Sorry your having troubles.
Try everything the other members has suggested.

Is the sound in 2 wheel or 4 wheel ?

You just might have to end up blocking up the RTV.
Have several friends on hand. Don't do by yourself.
Hoist back of RTV up. Safety Jacks & chains.
Try to make it do it jacked up.
Test in 2 & 4 wheel ...
If you still hear it.
Remove wheels. And test again.....

Check out the front drive shaft, make sure it's in tune and
set properly onto spline.

SAFETY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.

the noise just shows up in 2wd going fast otherwise its fine. I have checked out all of the joints and everything seems fine. I have already jacked up the machine and tried listening to every corner and heard nothing. It seems to only do it under the load of the machine. UGH! I will check into that carrier bearing. Thanks for all of the help so far!

Welcome to the forum.

High speed only or high RPM's also? Put it in neutral (with emergency brake on) and rev it all the way up. Does the noise appear?

The noise sounds similar to a rod knocking in the motor (I know that's not it of course).
In general, that's what diesel engines sound like. Does it sound like it's coming from the engine or somewhere in the driveline?

It is definitely a road speed noise. I have several diesel engines in various pieces of equipment along with diesel pick ups and none of them sound like this. It is mechanical noise coming from somewhere in the drive line. This thing has had prettty easy life so far, most of the hours are from county road travel. I have a hard time believing anything is wore out yet.

OK, cool. Just eliminating one thing at a time.

Do you have any hills you can drive down? Thinking of seeing if you can go at high speed, but with the tranny in neutral and engine at idle.

If you're at high speed and drag your brakes a little, does anything change?

I dont have a big enough hill to accomplish that but I am going to have my wife pull me down the road and I will see what happens. Maybe I should keep the video camera handy. This whole episode may make me $10,000 on americas funniest home videos!

That happened to me a few years back.Check the front drive shaft U joints.
They sound like a rod knock at high speeds when they are going bad.Im not sure if yours has the regular shaft of CV joint.

Well guys, here is what I have learned. The noise doesnt change if I lightly step on the brakes or go W.O. T in reverse. I checked and double checked all of the axle shaft joints on the wheels and everything feels good. I removed the front drive shaft and took it for a spin and the noise went away. I am then lead to believe I have a problem with the front drive shaft joints. They dont seem to be to loose however there is a little play when the shaft is wiggled around while hooked up to both the front diff. and transfer case. There is a boot over both the front and rear joints on the shaft. Can I assume that these are CV joints then? With the shaft out of the machine and on the bench there doesnt seem to be much for play in either joint. How much is acceptable? Is this a Kubota only part or are they available from a auto parts store? Do other people have this same noise or am I just being to fussy? Keep in mind that when I run it in 4wd it runs as quiet as a church mouse so it must be the free wheeling action when its in 2wd rattling the shaft around causing the noise.

Hi Deadshort,
My 2011 RTV 1100 did the same thing at 210 hrs, I removed the drive shaft and took it down the road and the noise was gone. The CV Joints were very stiff to move, The dealer took one off a new one on the lot, installed same - no noise.
It has 370 hrs on it and is running great and strong. It started making the noise at 180 hrs and became louder with more hrs - Drove me nuts

Glad you got it pin-pointed !!!

While you got it down, I'd go ahead and replace joints.

I have not done this yet, but think bordercollie stated, and maybe others, that they make a joint you can grease up. But it's not a Kubota joint. Let them chim in and tell the story .....:harley:

Hi Deadshort. You must have the "updated " drive shaft if it is one piece and has the rubber boots on the ends. The shaft on my 2011 RTV 900 is the one piece with boot covered ends like you are speaking of -I believe. You might could take it to one of the powertrain places if you are near a city and ask them about aftermarkets. I called the place here when I did my old style shaft and they wanted a premium but were still cheaper than K's parts. I went on and did it my self with after markets but had to adapt them to work. I replaced the rear u joints on the 'o5s old style driveshaft, rear ujoints and replaced the boots on the front cv joints.. I thought to myself when I got the 2011- "that thing looks expensive to replace." I have heard 500-700 for the thing. Good Luck and see if your dealer will show any compassion. bordercollie

Why would the joints go bad so prematurely? There has never been any abuse to this machine, in fact it has never been wet besides when I was washing it? Are they that poorly made or is there a geometry issue with the angle of the shaft? If it truley cost me between $500-$700 I am going to put it back in and turn up the radio so I dont hear the knocking noise.

Of course right now I am just outside of the manufacturers warranty period. When I had the dealer look at it I was only a few weeks from being out of warranty being that they couldnt find anything at that time I am afraid I might be writing out the check now. Do you suppose I might have a leg to stand on being it was in the dealer for this problem before my warranty was up?

Thanks for everyones help. I will keep you posted as to what I am able to come up with.

I would think your dealer should cover this as it was a issue before the warranty ran out.
A good dealer would do this I think if he values your business.
I just went out and looked at mine....its a 09 model and has the cv joint drive shaft also.
I only have 100 hours on mine.
There is a slight angle but nothing that should be a problem.
The front ones are on more of a angle then the drivshaft.
My guess it was a defective one as I have not seen many complaints on it in here.

Check with your dealer on the warranty . If the work order had that mentioned , then it may be a foot in the door for you. The price I read about was for the whole thing but maybe you can find the aftermarkets parts and fix it. You said the joints were stiff? Can you see them or are they sealed up by the boots, with it off?.
I understand what you mean about the noise though. On my '05, I became accustomed to the rattle and then added a piece of slit heater hose to the shaft to cut down on the rattle it produced. bordercollie

It was ZZZ2d1 who had mentioned that his joints were stiff. Mine move freely and honestly feel pretty good . If I was being very particular one of them might be a little worse than the other, it has a little bit of a catch, very, very minor though. If I didnt know any better I would say that they were good but since the problem went away with the shaft out I have to believe that they are my noise problem. The joints are covered by the boots on either end. What does that joint look like? Is it a ball and socket type joint? Is it splined with maybe two small u-joints in there?

Does any one have any information on if a cruise control is available for the RTV?
