Rtv 900 problems with lights

Hey guys. Im wondering if anyon has any info. I have a 07 rtv 900 and the lights arent working. I checked the fuses and they are all good. I unplugged the headlights and im getting 3 volts to them. I checked the voltage to the headlight switch. There are 2 wires. A yellow and a red. Im getting 12 volts to the yellow wire. 0 to the red. I know that when I switch the switch on I should be getting 12 to both. The only way I an get the headlights to work is if I unplug both wires from the switch and cross the yellow and red. I took the switch out to check it. I hooked 12 volts up to it and when the switch is switched on I get 12 volts to both terminals and 12 to one terminal when the switch is turned off. This is not making sense to me. Ill admit im not the best at electrical. would the switch be bad?

The fact that the lights come on when you short the yellow and red wires together would indicate that the switch is bad. The schematic shows a yellow coming from the fuse to the switch and a red from the switch out to the lights.

Here's something else to look for. If you pulled the switch and had 12 volts to both terminals in the ON position and 12 volts to only one terminal in the OFF position, its possible that the wiring connection to the switch is/was the problem. If you were getting 3 volts to the lights the corroded terminal could be where the voltage drop is occurring. If its a spade lug I'd change them both and clean the switch terminals. Good luck.

We apply Di-Electric grease on all our connectors. Don't ever have ANY problems. Commonly applied to any electrical connectors that come in regular contact with the elements and functions to prevent corrosion and degradation.

Apply when replacing switch, connectors, installing more accesories on RTV....... It will help !!!!

Excellent point Two-Guns, that stuff will save a lot of headaches.Would be nice if it was gobbed on from the factory at all electrical connections.

And, The old Toyota pic up of mine had the original tail light bulbs rust into the sockets several years ago. I had been driving around with no tail lights until I went for the yearly inspection. Got them working again with wd 40 and new bulbs. Then, I put on a dose of the de grease. That rusting up won't happen again.... Good stuff!! bordercollie

I tried to clean up the terminals but couldnt get inside that much. Im suspecting what epinswla said about the voltage drop being at the terminals. I tested the switch and it seemed fine. When switched off the one terminal had 12 volts and when switched on both terminals had 12 so that says the switch is good. I am going to replace the connectors and report back. If I get them to work gobbs of grease die electric grease will be used lol
