RTV 900 Service

Hi:

I have had my 900 for about a year and a half now. When I purchased it the dealer did a complete fluid and filter change at around 100 hours (it was a demo unit I bought) I now have 260 hours on it so I figured a better do some service. I have a of question and a comment:

1: If you don't change the hydro fluid and just want to do the filters (I was thinking since the fluid was changed at 100 hours that maybe the filters would be fine with a complete fluid change at 400 hours) how much fluid will I lose by quickly spinning off the filters and replacing them? I only have about a litre here now and I don't know if that will be enough?

2: Just a comment on getting at the fuel filter -- what a lousy place to put it? I felt like I needed 3 hands !! :wtf:

3: Cleaned the spark arrestor - it was black as hell - I may lose that soon

4: Anything else I should do?

By the way, I made a high rise intake with PVC and it has made a huge difference in keeping the air filter clean (suggestion from this forum)

Thanks in advance
Glenn

Glennm,

I recently changed the transimission filters on my XT with the help of my son. I lost about one quart of fluid. The extra hands allowed plugging some holes when the HST filter (side filter). Very little fluid lost when removing the suction (back) filter. This is a good time to remove and clean the transmission skid plate since you will likely get fluid on the top side. My had quite a bit of debris on top as well.

If not previously changed, I'd recommend changing the power steering fluid.

I did not change my hydraulic dump fluid at 200 hrs. I seldom operate the dump, so I elected to leave it as-is.

Did you order the Bad Dawg mirrors? I really like mine. If I have concern it is that the mirrors are fabricated of almost 100% plastic.

I know the spark arrestor causes us some heart ache. I for one have elected not cut the screen off and I'm glad I didn't. If the RTV does emit sparks without the screen, I would have set to my farm as a result of our exceptional drought. I'm probably going to purchase a second exhaust pipe, remove the screen from one and swap out based on weather conditions. I checked the price of an exhaust pipe and remember the price to be around $50.00. That's surely cheeper than starting fires.

For those of you that desire to convince me that diesels don't emit sparks from the exhaust, I'd suggest saving your typing. I've spent 45 years driving farm tractors and have experienced sparks from their exhaust. Also, remember that I'm a nuclear electric utility employee. We're known for being insanely conservative.

Hi Glenn and welcome.

Yes indeed that fuel filter is in a tight place. When changing it, I take off that panel around the air cleaner by removing the few bolts and then using one of the fuel line crimpers on the fuel hose to keep the fuel cut off while I work on getting the filter bolted in place. some v grips might would work if the hose was protected from the jaws by duct tape etc. I got a little routine down pat now and have only had one "canipshon" fit since I started working on mine in '05. :)
The spark arrestor has fine screen wire on it and it clogs easily, The length of the "thing" should not be cut because it fits into a baffle in the interior and that keeps the tail pipe from becoming end heavy and then you may have metal fatique to deal with. I adapted a few pieces of the screen with an "enlarger" but most of the screen is still there. You can always make 'em bigger but one it is done -it is done. good luck, bordercollie

Ugh. I'm lying about only having one ofthose fits, I had several when replacing the rear ujoints. :boom:
