RTV-X900 Hydrostat making metal.

Thanks in advance for the help. I have a RTV-X900 that quit moving and has metal in the tank and in the filters. I have not pulled it apart yet but have been reading a lot on the forum. I was looking for some advice before I get started. Who makes a reasonable hydraulics test kit that fits Kubota and hopefully John Deere skid steers. What are the recommended procedures to flush the rest of the hydraulic system of debris? Any gotchas I should be aware off, flying spring to the eye, etc.. I know some of these concerns are out of order so to speak, but just trying to get ahead of the curve. I will post updates as I tear things apart, hopefully next week.

Thanks again

what kind of metal? iron? bronze? if the source is the hst could be a bearing or valve plates etc. if the source is the transmission it gets different. probably a disassembly of the rear cover on the hst could reveal the source of the metal.

Not having the time to work on it i brought it to the Kubota dealer, they found metal in the HST, filters and tank. they were happy to slap a new HST on it for approx. $9000, looks like I'm adding hydraulic mechanic to the resume. i plan on taking it off and opening it up next week. from the pics they sent me it looked like iron. one of my employees was driving it pulling some nursery trailers and said they heard a pop and it would barely move anymore. They took out a skid steer the week before. When it rains... do you guys recommend taking the whole HST out or can it be split in the vehicle?

you can service the hst while still in the machine. i suggest you use the search function as there are several good threads with pictures and procedures.

I was able to start tearing it apart today, found the obvious problem! Suggestions are appreciated as to what should be replaced. seems to be a lot of wear. Still have a bit more to take apart and clean. The larger swash Plate has a decent size divot worn in it, can those be re-ground or is it a replace item.

you should price the parts compared to a reman hst from kubota. looks like just about everything is toast.

I was thinking the same thing, toasted parts that is. A quick look at Messicks and it’s easy to hit $4k just for the main parts. Does Kubota or anybody else sell remans? I know Kubota sells new for about $6200. Doesnt look good for the home team.

does kubota sell just the hst unmarried from the transmission? you could salvage an hst off of ebay or some other outfit and go through it or use the parts out of it in yours.

The 6k price is for just the hst. The RTV is a high hour / mileage machine, I was hoping for an easy fix. I guess I will look at other options now.

When you say high hour and mileage what does this machine have? I posted a thread with similar failure. My machine has 1225 hrs and 8000 miles.

I got all the parts I needed from messicks for right under $1000

it has 8000+ hours and around 20k miles. We use it at a nursery to drag nursery trailers with plants/ trees on them. Not the easiest life. Most everything Needs to be replaced, I quit adding when I got to around $4k in parts.

Wow that is a lot! Have you drained the gearbox fluid and inspected that? Mine had a lot of micro metal almost looked like break in material.

Wow. 20k miles at an average of 2.5 mph. Dang that is a lot of seat time. How many years did it take to put 20k on it?
