RTV900 Muffler ?; Hyd oil filler cap ?; Radiator drain?

1) While working on my RTV900 this past weekend, I noticed what appears to be drain plug at the bottom rear of the muffler. Have any of you ever needed to "drain" condensation your muffler? Or is this just in case you get into water above the exhaust pipe. 2) The rubber filler cap has vent slot on the inside edge of the cap. Is there a particular position to place the slot? 3) I could only get about one-half of the coolant to drain from the bottom of the radiator. Is there another drain plug on the engine? Thanks, Captain

Hi Captain, What year model do you have? I use a hex wrench and remove/replace the plug you are talking about. I have mostly gotten soot type particulates out of it.Never any water. I did this to the Case skid steer and got probably about a 1/2 cup of soot out of it. I sort of goosed(the book says 1/2 throttle) the engine and just blew it out. Then replaced the plug. I never thought about the position of the slot in the trans cap.I don't see it mentioned. On the radiator, I suppose you had the cap off to avoid a vacuum while draining.? The manual says the cap must be completely removed in order to drain the system. Nothing is mentioned about any other plug. It holds 4.2 Qts of mix. I use only distilled water mixed with a quality antifreeze. It really helps keep the radiator clear of mineral deposits. Good Luck , Bordercollie

Thanks, BC. I have a 2005 model. I'll check my muffler for soot, etc. I bet I only loosened the radiator cap and the system did not vent properly. I will re-do and see if the results differ. Captain

Radiator drain

Bordercollie, thanks for your feedback. I went back and attempted to drain again. Again, I only got a tad more than two quarts of liquid. The cap was completely removed and I even attempted to use the air hose to force the remainder out to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions? Captain

Perhaps you are getting only the contents of the rad but not the engine block. When I installed an engine block heater and a cab heater into my 900 last year, its seems to me that when I emptied the rad, i collected about what you are getting..approx 2 qts. When I sliced into the lower rad hose to T in the return from my cab heater and punched out the frost plug to insert the block heater, the contents of the block emptied thru the cut lower rad hose. Perhaps your engine thermostat being closed is preventing the block from draining. You might try removing the thermostat next time you try to drain the system......Just a guess...

That is a good point Kanook has. The liquid has to be there. If all else fails, undo the lowest water hose on the engine and see if it drains. I have an '05 too and love it. Bordercollie

Bump . I have heard that you can "burp" the radiator by parking on on incline or jacking up the front so that the radiator somewhat elevated. You can also check the fan to see if it is coming on too. I unplugged my '05 's fan and rigged a plug with end terminals to fit then hooked it to the battery's connections to test it. There are other things to check on the fan not running when it has tested good :fuse and relay etc also. There is a thread on our forum tagged something like "cooling fan needed" if more information or for sure if a new fan is needed- will save $$. bordercollie

the drain on the muffler is for soot, they say run it up to temp, pull the plug and run it at half throttle i think it was to blow it out.then plug it back up.

as for draining the system, pull the hose on the air cleaner side off the motor, pull the hose apart for the trans oil cooler and it should drain the majority of the coolant.as for bleeding the system,i usually run it for 15 min, with the cap off topping off the coolant each time i check, then cap it. never had a issue with it.
