Snow Plow Shoe Modification

Here's a picture of the snow plow shoe modification I made.

I cut off the 5" long 1/2 inch rod & welded on an 8" piece of 5/8" rod. This allows me to raise the scraper bar off the gravel by 1". It also leaves some play in case the next scraper bar is taller yet. I did have to enlarge the size of the hole on the plow itself.

It looks good, but I haven't tested it out yet, I've learned thru experience that the softest thing out there when plowing is steel(that's why so many places sell parts for snow plows!). I'd like to get a close-up of Cobbie's new shoes in case I have to re-fab at some point in time.

Rich,

Thanks for the picture. That sounds like a good plan increasing the size to 5/8. Let me ask your opinion on something. I have always wondered how a pneumatic tire would work on gravel in place of the shoe. As you mention the shoes seem to be the weakest link. I plow mostly on gravel but do have some asphalt. On the asphalt I usually let the scraper bar sit on the asphalt since the entire blade does not seem heavy enough to cause any problems. So the design I'm thinking of would give me about an inch of clearance on the gravel and then allow the tires to pivot out of the way for asphalt. The tires would also make it easy to move the plow around when not on the RTV.

Thanks again

The wheel would have to be behind the bladeenough to allow 360 rotation. This would put the mounting point about halfway up the back of the blade which isn't a strong point. Think about when the blade is angled or your back dragging. Also, the balance point will be way out front and would tip forward when not hooked up. I would consider a solid tire, I don't think a pneumatic tire would hold up.

If my modification doesn't hold up, I'm going to re-work the mount on the plow to accept a standard, off-the-shelf shoe(Western, Fisher, Myer). They are taller & have about a 1 1/4" shaft. I'm actually thinking of doing this to my tractor's 3-point back blade.

The mods done to my skid shoes were 3/4 inch bolts and a much larger shoe. The current shoesareabout 4 inch in dia.I bent the curtis shoes the first couple of times that I snow plowed, the dealer wanted $60 for 2 new shoes. This was a no brainer for me,that is why I upgraded to a heavier setup.coobie

rgm,I see in your pic you have a cotter key installed to hold your shoes on.I had them installed on mine but they spun around and bent and I lost one of my shoes.I now have a different setup.coobie
