Snowing in September

For those still waiting to try out their snow plows, you need to be in the Yukon! We had a considerable dump of snow all day Friday, continuing into Saturday morning. Heavy, wet stuff--quite unusual for us. Anyway, needed to get back into the swing of things with my plow. Just the OEM Curtis plow with the electric motor to raise and lower it. Works fine for me, with a snow blower to attach when I run of room for pushing the snow aside.

So this morning spent plowing the driveway (about a mile and half to plow) and then this afternoon doing a bit of firewood gathering in the woods. Pictures attached, including using the cedar hot tub last night (the hot tub is a new addition this summer--been sitting in the yard for almost 8 years, finally got around to building the deck and installing the tub. Propane heated, as we live off grid). The hot tub is going to feel extra good tonight!

I can vouch for that. Same nonsense here, about 8 miles south of Whitehorse. Wet, heavy stuff. I got to plow my driveway about three times.

Just got my blade put back on in time. Lucky me .... I guess.

Supposed to warm up again, but the lying weather vermin don't really know much about it.

Oh well, at least we're warm while plowing. RR

Hey Rem. Good to have another Sourdough on the forum. Long range forecast is for colder than normal, but less snow than normal. The colder part seems like a fit. A bit off on the snow forecast, so far, eh?

No kidding. But then they are almost always off. I've always wondered what kind of bottle they spin in Edmonton or wherever they forecast our weather from.

I was building a little add on garage to house my 1100 in when the snow hit. Ewwww Oh well, we'll get it done sooner or later.

This will be my first winter with the Kubota so I'm looking forward to clearing my driveway in comfort for a change.

Good pics.

Let's hope it's plus 9 tomorrow like the lying weather vermin have so indicated. RR

This is my third winter with my RTV900. It has been a great machine and a real workhorse. It needs to live outside, but if it is really cold I plug it in for an hour or so before trying to start. It has never failed to roar to life. We live off grid, so cannot keep it plugged in more than absolutely necessary. You can see me using it with my snowblower at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J73BEgcHHzs

The snowblower is an impressive unit.

Do you feel you need both? If you had to go with one or the other, which would it be ??

I couldn't justify both at the time, but perhaps in my future. RR

I use the plow for as long as I can, until the snowbanks along the drive are such that I cannot keep the road wide enough by only plowing. By then there is typically a good base along the drive, and I can then use the blower to blow snow over the banks and with minimum risk of picking up stones from the road (which tend to break the blower's shearpins).

The plow is cheaper to use (no gas!) and helps get the road ready for the blower when I need it. If the road was paved, it might make be a bit easier to just use the blower--but early in the season on my road would be murder picking up gravel. And the plow is not expensive. And my drive is 2kms to keep clear.

I'm looking forward to seeing how my little Eagle country plow works but I'm not quite ready for snow just yet.....I was bass fishing yesterday in 80 deg weather :brows: I guess that's the beauty of living in the "deep south" :wall:

That "bass" comment was cruel and unusual punishment.

We are supposed to see some sun today before the world turns to white again on Monday.

Raining this morning. Oh well, we had a lovely summer and an extraordinary fall. I guess we deserve this.

Thanks for the snow blower info, Onfoot. Hopefully I won't feel I need one. We'll see.

Time for first coffee. RR

ONFOOT......

A look-alike Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson you ain't. I'd stick to choppin' wood if I were you. :yum:

Good to see you getting good use out of that RTV of yours. All my family and friend ( only got one friend who'll acknowledge me as one as long as I insist on that heated cab) think I'm nuts in looking forward to winter and all the snow pushing, snow blowing and cheque cashing from my paying customers.
(family and my friend do see the merits of the cheque cashing:a1:) I do keep my cloths on however while out there clearing that snow 'cause I'm no Cruise or Gibson look-alike either.

Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson?

ONFOOT......

A look-alike Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson you ain't. I'd stick to choppin' wood if I were you.

In my younger years folks used to think I looked like Robert Redford. But them days are long gone! Not that it matters. There ain't nobody around to appreciate my sculpted form except for the wife and it's all she can do to repress her laughter. But it doesn't matter. The hot tub is its own reward!

WOW am I jealous that you already have snow. Winter is my favorite time of the year and I'd really love to retire up to Alaska.

Living off grid would be a huge bonus!
