My mower cranks when the battery is connected. the key is not turned on or clutch engaged. I changed spindles for blades and every thing was good now starts as stated.

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid or hot connection straight from the battery to the wrong side of the solenoid. Tap on it a couple times with a rubber mallet and see if it works again.
