Winch for rear - thinking outside the box here...

OK, y'all had me thinking about a multimount system as well as a capability for hoisting into the box.

I had a long day so I opened a "beverage" a little early (a few minutes ago) and while looking at the RTV, came up with a different idea.

The basic idea is to mount a rearward facing winch off the rear ROPS.

Basically, run a piece of tubular or U shaped steel horizontally from the 2 rearward vertical ROPS pieces. In the middle of that, mount a small winch. When I say small, I'm thinking of a 1500# ATV winch. This would get mounted about 2/3 of the way up the ROPS from the top of the cargo box. If you have a high-mount air intake, the horizontal steel mounting bracket would go right behind/through the back of the air intake (as there's a nice gap there).

This is high enough that you can tilt your bed (although not all the way, otherwise the winch cable would rub) pretty far and strap onto a deer or hog or whatever and drag it into the box. It's a relatively small winch but it may be enough to get you unstuck if used with a snatch block.

A 1500# winch probably costs less than the wiring and mounting brackets for doing a multi-mount setup using a single winch.

Thoughts?

BC,I think you got a good plan there. What about mounting to the horizontal ROPs bar? Seems it would be easy to do and out of the dump beds way. Lift bed and winch that game in, let the bed down, drive off! Deer, Elk,Bear, Moose, they all would reel in! Hunting has never been so much fun. Getting unstuck from the back would require you to thread through an eye off rear receiver so you are not putting down force on the RTV. I don't think 1500lb unit will cause damage but would be very limited in pulling ability. 1000lbs on outer spool. A+ for game winch, D for recovery capablities.

When you say horizontal ROPS bar, do you mean the one at the top? Mine is buried under roof so I can't do that.
Not sure if pulling down is necessarily a bad thing. I guess it depends on what you're stuck in. If snow/ice, I'd want it pulling down. You could run down to the receiver or just grab higher in a tree.

Agreed that it's a low score on recovery but I guess it depends on the needs. If you're running worksite tires and get stuck in the slick clay, I'd bet it would pull you out. If you're in TWO GUNS gumbo stuff and your RTV quits in the middle of the swamp, no... I wouldn't expect it to pull you to higher ground.

I have one of the earliest made RTVs and I'm almost at 4 years of ownership. I've only gotten stuck twice in those 4 years. The first was as mentioned. Slick clay and worksite tires. Any winching would have gotten me out. The other time I got stuck... well, don't know if I want to talk about that one but winches weren't going to pull me out, period...

It's just an idea for having "light" rearward winching capabilities for loading game or about the same as 2 friends pushing from the front to get you unstuck.

BC, getting stuck were no winchs could get you out has got to be a great story. I promise not to laugh. I won't promise for Two Guns though.

Can't say if it's a great story but it was fun at the time...

Are you familiar with the term "silt pond"? I'll define for those that may not be familiar. I live in a very hilly, rural area. For fire protection, fishing, skating... it's common to have a pond on the property. You capture springs and run-off water from the hill to feed the pond. Since the incoming water has sediment in it, you install a smaller pond upstream. This is the "silt pond" and it allows all the incoming dirt and sediment to collect there and settle so only clear water enters the main pond.

Well, one night... Oops. Need to stop the story there to mention something... Beer, a lot of it, was involved and one guy said his ATV was so tough he could drive it through the silt pond and nobody elses ATV could do it. Well, beer, challenge... Off we went.

The first ATV went in hard and fast. The only thing visible was the handlebars. Sure enough, he crawled out the other side. The next ATV went in and did the same. Ohhh, this is too much fun so they kept trying it. With each pass, the base of this silt pond got looser and looser and after awhile, nobody was making it through. I would strap on to each and tug them out with the RTV.

As the evening passed, they started saying that the RTV had no chance of making it. For the longest time, I agreed but as the peer pressure grew, I had to take a shot at it, and did... Much to everyone's surprise, I made it. Woo Hoo!!! OK, that was too much fun. I 'gotta do that again. I make my entrance into the pond but didn't make it out... Belly up. I was in mud up to the seat (therefore, the engine, tranny... everything below my butt was buried.

It took both ATV's pulling with their winches, wheels spinning, RTV tires spinning... to get me even to budge. An onlooker already had the tracked skidsteer on the way to pull me out when we finally got the RTV where it had traction and pulled itself out.

Fast forward to next day. I look at my RTV. I WON'T DO THAT
AGAIN... It took several washings and several weeks to get all the
rocks and mud out. The radiator got clogged, main belt knocked off...
I had to remove all the belly guards to get rocks out. Luckily, fluids weren't contaminated.

Lucky for me, I only had a cleaning and belt to put back on. The ATV's were trashed... Broken hand guards, ruined CV joints...

Think I know why the second round got you into a stand-still with the pond / RTV , you was running low on the go-go juice ~~~~~~

yes great story BC. Yet I am disappointed, before I bought my RTV... you guys told me I could not get it stuck...[:)] and I have all these silt ponds I wanted to ride through.

for your winch idea.. I was wondering about just running some rollers or pulleys so that you could use yourfront winch.. but that sounds more complicated than mounting another.

That was a great story, but it just sounds like a regular Pa get together with some great guys having a little fun.............Great story.........I am sorry that I missed that one..........LOL........

brought back memories for me. first time i stuck my rtv900 i tried
climbing out of fresh excavated clay loaded with firewood on a very
steep hill. 1 ton chevy truck pulled it right out cause i was not gonna
dump that wood. other time i high centered it in a huge slop puddle on
a skidder road. paid two amish kids ten bucks to drag it out with a
team of belgians. they thought that was funny as hell ,but do love to
ride on rtv when i am out and about. Bill B.

The thought of my wife using our horses to pull me out. She would never let me live it down! I can just picture those Amish boys and their Belgians. Thanks for sharing that one.
