Winch Has a Ghost

TWO GUNS

Senior Member
Rigged up a gin pole truck. Took the winch off another older gin truck.
Ramsey 10 or 12 K winch. Rigged up the winch. Runs like a charm.

We were changing out a diesel engine in a old work truck. Pulled engine and set down. Hooked the
tail-hook and tighened up the slack out of the line. Truck was off.
WINCH WAS OFF. We using a two way toggle switch ...

Worked around the truck for about another 15 minutes. Nothing.
Then, we went to town to get some parts, returned and sometime while we were gone. Winch "kicked" itself on and unwound cable until it got tangled up and must have choked itself down. Think it was the silinoid done it, that is a guess. But we pushed the toggle switch one way, would barely turn, none the other way. Think it might have burned up the motor. Hope it didn't hurt the gears or the winch itself. Any ideas.
We were in the process of putting a master cutt off switch on the machine this evening. Should of done it before the first lift ...
Any suggestions what could have went wrong. I'm just baffled...... Can't even think straight on this one ....
I've posted on several sites, just trying to snag a answer.

bordercollie, Thanks for the kind words !!!!

We ( Hunter, Rutger & I ) was thinking the same thing. For it was pulled in front of Hunters's shop. Shop closed, but his personal trucks and his work trucks was all around, along with Rutgers.
We left to town in my work truck. It's Possible.
We going to check some things out this morning. Silinoids / motors and such.

But the "Visitor" theory is the first thing that hit me also. For if you remember right, several years ago, when I moved my RTV down to the plantation down the road to do some deer scouting and managment things.
Dropped off my RTV in front of the owner tractor shed by the road. And left it to return about three hours later with some more stuff. Some "thugs" the plantation owners had arrested for stealing and tresspassing returned and thinking my RTV was one of his. They busted out the OEM Kubota Front Glass ...
( but 'ole two guns found out, and HE took care of that problem ):whistling:

And then again, we had a Mack truck crank itself in 1980 and run threw a fence and into big old oak tree. It choked it down. Thank God for the tree .
That was a
newer truck that a starter silonoid went bad. Ruined the starter replaced it and silinoid. Truck is still used today at a farm hauling crops in out of the fields. So maybe the silinoid was just bad and replacing it and winch motor will fix.
The switches to the winch is in a tool box. But the box was NOT locked. A person would have to look in to find it. Let's just hope it was not a "THUG".

Don't think we have any enemies here. But now days, you never know. People will do anything to hurt anybody, anytime for no reason.

Remember that pic of the cemetery you posted a couple days back? How far away is that?
I have no other explanation.

Sorry for the grief that you are going through on this. Surely NOT making light of this serious subject, for some, that is the best they can do. I do go by the "thug" theory or just the idiot factor that applies to many now adays. Yes, there could be a short in the switch; but in all my days have never seen one cause a runaway anything. Same with a solenoid. It's usually just the opposite, one has to short across them to get them to work.

Really hope that it's just a motor situation and all else is just fine. Perhaps, even if you hold your tongue just right, the motor will also be repairable. I wonder why the original owner of the winch trashed it??????????..........or quit using it??????? A hidden cause there?????

Anyway, it gives you something to think about and do while you guys are sittin in front of a fan there in the shop till in the early morning when it is cool enough to get out and do something else on it............God bless..........Dennis

Oh no. Nothing wrong with winch. I know the winch, and used it many times.
The truck the winch was on, engine overheated in the field and mess up engine. And the tranny was slipping really bad. So, man decided to take the winch off and install
on another truck. I approched him, and told him I would be glad to buy that winch off that truck if he would sell..... For if he was going to buy a new truck, he should get him a new winch and sell me this one.
I really liked that winch, for it was a strong dependable tool. We come up with a $ amount and Hunter took off other truck and installed it on one of his work units. The was no problem with the winch, and no hidden cause. And I agree with you about the way sinlioids work. Switch itself might of shorted out somehow.

That really is a mystery... sort of like all those missing E-mails at the IRS. Whatever the problem, someone knows how the answer. Just glad no one was around if that winch just magically started on its own. Everyone, we have to think SAFETY all the time, especially if there are heavy loads and soft human tissue and bones involved.
