Winch selection

Hey guys, I'm wanting to replace the 2k Warn winch on my 05 RTV900. I just don't feel its heavy enough. I'm going to go with a Warn vantage. But I'm kind of torn between a 3k or 4k winch. And Synthetic Rope or traditional cable.

Any input guys?

Go with as MUCH power as your pocketbook and fittings on the RTV will work with. No choice either way. As I carefully wind up the cable on the winch making sure no kinks or KNOTS while avoiding those broken strands that love to tear gloves...........Meanwhile revvvvving the engine to get every bit of 12V++++ that that alternator can make to get just one more grunt out of the 3K............

After doing all of that........is there a choice?????..........Merry Christmas...........Dennis

Not sure about the new winches but years ago, the 3K winch fit in the "cubby" but the 4K didn't. That was one of the main reasons I went with the 3K (Ramsey).

My winch will drag my RTV with the brakes on so that's enough power for me. Remember, there is always a "weak point". I'd prefer my winch to bog down/stop than it be running great and something else on the RTV is the weak point and breaks.

I'm a big fan of the synthetic rope. Besides being easier to handle, it doesn't store any energy so if it breaks, it falls to the ground instead of flying back at you. If you do use the rope, you should switch to a Howse fairlead (instead of the roller) since in theory the rope can find it's way into the corners of the rollers and get damaged. I haven't switched but I keep my pulls as straight as possible.

Ramsey,Warn,Superwinch are all good brands of winches. I am sure there are other brands out there that are just as good. The synthetic rope is for sure a good idea. The rope is a lot safer to use as the steel cable can act like a whip if something happens during a pull. Have seen folks get hurt bad with big steel winch lines. I have the factory Kubota winch on my buggie and it came with steel cable but after it gets some wear on it I will change it out to the rope and change the fairlead out. Hope you have a wonderfull Christmas!IMG_0123.jpg

WELL, I ordered a Warn Vantage 4000 with synthetic rope. We shall see. I guess the vantage series is now supposedly chinese, and the Provantage is the series all the OEMs are reboxing as their own. I just couldn't swing the Provantage and the warranty on the Vantage is 5 year mechanical, 1 year on the electrical.

The winch on my rig now is a Warn 2.5 CI ( not a 2k like I was thinking) which from what I can tell is a higher quality winch than the Vantage, but not heavy enough for this portly Bota.
