X1100 Strut fell off

Watch your front struts... very hard to see the top connector but it unscrewed itself and the front of the vehicle collapsed while I was driving. Where the T fitting screws on to the shock is where it unscrewed. Only a little damage to the fan shroud. With a mirror you should be able to look up there and see if you see any exposed threads. If threads are exposed you will have to remove the whole thing to rescrew it on. I used locktite which should have been on there the first time but there was no sign of it.

Lost the top washer which sits on the shoulder of the rod and holds the spring down. Kubota doesn't sell it as a separate part you have to buy the whole strut assembly. I instead had the local machine shop make me one to our best guess of specs. Back to hay making!

X1100C 3,216 miles, 628 hours. And I still hate this piece of junk!

Ohhhhhh my Cornerstone that is terrible to hear. I am keeping my 2011 900xt as long as possible and am definitely not interested in the new models... Right now , I have 2750 hrs+- and she has been a good machine with the only repair I made was rear ujoints. Only 2 more months and she will be paid for. When I do decide to get another utility vehicle for the farm- the Lord willing a long time from now- I am looking at my diesel options closely -one in particular . collie

I realized when I was looking at the other strut with a mirror that it really isn't going to tell you anything unless you lift it all the way up so that the wheel drops down because the spring pushes the plates and washer up against the T fitting. When it's really loose you might be able to tell something, but I am wrong about the threads being exposed.

Thanks for the update. I have been looking at my X1100C and am not completely sure i understand what part unscrewed itself. was it the cross bolt that holds the top of the shock to the frame? or was it a part of the shock itself?

It was the cross piece... A T type fitting with a bolt through it to the frame and the strut is screwed into the bottom. Not a spot where a camera would help. The cross bolt was fine it was where the strut/shock screws into it.

in your opinion what is the best way to check for this? does it require removal of the dampener:pat:?

The only way I see to check it is to remove it completely from the machine. I am going to remove the other one and apply loctite to it too. Unless I find that it's sufficiently tight that I cannot easily remove it.

The damage that it can do to the fan and other things up inside is not worth the risk. Fortunately I was going very slow at the time.

so a good way to check would be to take the top cross bolt loose and swing the shock out for inspection? oh don't forget the jack of course!!

Yep, I haven't done it yet so I can't swear that it will swivel out or if you have to detach the bottom too. I used the little loader tractor to hold it up when I repaired the other one. But I needed to get it out that way because it was wedged into the fan shroud.

I was searching the net for information on the front suspension and tripped on a recall link on dampners. the recall was not Kubota specific but it was for early 2014 and the defect was that the top attachment was not fully seated on its threads. I know this might be an unrelated event but the similarity is uncanny. probably a good idea to check ours.
