X1100C tie rod removal

I've searched the forum, but can't find any posts on removing a tie rod on a X1100c. I bent mine and got a new rod, but I can't get the old one off. I have the workshop manual, but all it says is to remove the tie rod. Am I missing something? I did find a video on another site that said his Mac Tool guy came by and had a tool to do the job, but he didn't show how to use it. And, the audio left a lot to be desired.

The piston rod turns with the tie rod end. I've tried vice grips on the piston rod, but it just turns inside the vice grips. There must be a way to get this thing apart.

Anybody know how?

isn't it just a heim joint? i will look at mine and see. if it is you need to loosen the jam nut and then you can pull the bolt out odf the center of the joint and seperate it from the hub. then remove and replace.

No it threads onto the power steering piston rod and has a cv joint on it before it goes to the wheel end of the tie rod. The CV joint on the opposite end also turns freely, thus I can't get the CV joint on the bent tie rod loose as the power steering rod also turns freely in the cylinder.

But, thank you, at least you tried to help.

i just looked at mine. it is a late 2014 model so it may be different from yours but i doubt it. on the outboard end of the tie rod there is a a tie rod end that is threaded on the end of the tie rod and held with a jamb nut. the hub is attached to the tie rod end with a taper and castellated nut with a cotter pin in it. on the other inboard end is a rubber boot and under that is the attachment to the steering unit,i am not sure what is under that but i expect it is a ball joint held with some sort of cir clip keeper. the tie rod has flats made into it for a wrench so you can remove the jamb nut, then take out the cotter pin and remove the castellated nut and very carefully tap on the loosened nut or get a tuning fork to remove the taper part of the tie rod end. after that is done you simply turn off the tie rod end and then you can pull back the rubber boot and do what you have to do there to get the rod out of the steering unit. do you have the new parts to look at before disassembly?

Ah ... yes, and there lies the problem. I can get the tie rod end off, but the problem is with the inner end. I do have the new tie rod and the inner end screws onto the power steering shaft. Under the boot on the inner end is the CV joint. You see, I can't get the inner end broken loose because I haven't been able to hold the power steering shaft from turning with the tie rod, when I try to unscrew it's shaft.

Thank you again for trying,

interesting. the cv joint had me confused. can you disassemble the cv joint and then remove the half cv joint from the tie rod in a vice? does the cv joint have balls inside it?

Bummer.

Hope you figure out a solution.

When you do, please post it so the next person doesn't have to go thru this.

Thanks!!!!

I don't know about taking apart the CV joint, but they have very tight boots on them. to try and get a water and dirt seal after splicing on the new rod would probably be unsuccessful. At over 50 bucks for the new tie rod, I don't think I would attempt that.

Thank you for the links. I have watched those videos numerous time, but until tonight, I hadn't fully understood the procedure. After watching tonight I understand how he did it ( I think ). He clamped the opposite side first to hold the shaft, and then did the same thing on the side he wanted to remove. I'll get two of those clamps and hope the bad side breaks loose first.

Us old dudes sometimes are kinda thick.

The tie rod clamps worked. Luckily the bad side broke lose first and then the rest was easy. Not sure what I'd have done if the good side broke first.
