A glitch when starting

I've noticed lately that when I start my 900 that it hesitates a little then clears up. It's most apparent on the first start of the day and doesn't matter if I engage the glow plugs or not. Fuel filter maybe? What do ya'll think?

Tough call. I would expect fuel filter to do that all the time not just the first start of the day ...but, if you have not changed that in a while that and it's needed anyway that is a cheap place to start. It might just fix it. Stranger things have happened.

Hi Bigorange, Like Doc said, I would start with the fuel filter also check the fuel hose clamps for tightness and go from there. Notice the fuel line coming from the tank when you change the filter and see if there is good flow there. Some members have had crud in the tank cause blockage and then had fuel problems. Let us know how things work out. bordercollie

had the same problem on my 900. It was a bad glow plug. Check the resistance on each one , any one with resistance higher than 6 ohms is bad. You can get them at Napa , around $20.00 each.

What temp are you starting at? The glow plugs need about 15 seconds before going to start in +50 F. About 30 seconds or more below freezing. Could also be a bunch of crappy fuel with high flashpoint.

I'm in middle TN so it's been high mid to high 80's for the most part. I just refueled yesterday so we'll see if it continues. I'm going to check the glow plugs this evening.

Since it got better with the new fuel. Sounds like bad fuel.

But I would still change out the fuel filter.

And don't forget to use Stanadyne Diesel fuel additive.

........ or something equal to. Remember, our diesel is not as good as it
used to be. Very cheap investment insurance !!!

I'm planning to do a complete service as soon as I can line it up.
I run farm (dyed) fuel in it. They blend an additive when it's delivered to the Coop. I got this recent tank from a different Coop than the previous one. My daily driver is a '97 powerstroke and I agree that most pump diesel needs help.

MIns has started to hesitate the past few days also.I changed the filter and with a 1/4 tank it still wants to hesitate like its running out of fuel.Im going to top off the tamk today and add some seafoam to it and see what happens.Hopefully maybe a little condensation in the tank is all.Ill know more in the next few days.

add some seafoam to it QUOTE]

This is just me, just a suggestion.
Siphon all old fuel out of tank & discard. Add enough of Seafoam , 32-48 oz., that way the next "gulp" of fuel will be almost pure SeaFoam. Run the machine . Then after running awhile, maybe 20 minutes or so. Stop engine and let sit for a few hours, then add fresh diesel and run .
It will clean up your engine. It works, for I've seen it done this way.

Plus, you have done changed out the fuel filter. Get that old fuel out and let the
Seafoam clean the injectors.

Use Seafoam religiously in EVERYTHING down here. It works wonders to engines.
We buy it by the gallon. Cuts the price in half.......
If you buy it by the little cans, cost will eat you up !!!!

.... and if you wish, you can add a little something
for lube if it makes you fell better.

Thanks Two Guns
Ive used seafoam for everything around here from the bota to 2 cycle engines 4 cycle engines to adding in oil before an oil change. Its the best stuff around. I filled the tank today and started it up and lifted the bed to make sure there was a flow.To my surprise there was no fuel coming from the tank so all i could do was give it a shot of air to blow back what was clogging it.I now have plenty of fuel flow now.Hopefully it was a bit of gum that the seafoam will disolve.
Ill keep you informed and hope you had a hell of a lot better summer there than I had here hence my quietness.Lost my mother in law last month my long time dog dusty sunday and a goose last night to damn coyotes.

I was really surprised of the blockage myseld.I filter the fuel from the gas can to the 55 gallon barel then on the electric pump there is another filter.Evidently something must have gummed up on me.My typical luck.Other than that Machine running fine for now but I do expect to replace a U joint just as temps get below freezing thats a given lol.

I am sorry for your losses also Mark. It is a hard journey but I believe in Heaven and it gives peace. I knows some days will be hard but just keep the faith and it will bring great joy one day. That fact keeps me going.. bordercollie
