slipping

the transmission in my rtv 900 started slipping in 2wd F/R. In 4wd it seems to work fine...oil/filters recently changed 1250hrs...any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.

What kind/brand of tranny fluid did you use? If not Kubota's UTV or SUDT that can cause problems like this.

Check the rear axle nuts, there was bulletin on the torque for these, I think 140 Ft Lb. There has been some reports of the hub slipping on the axle and stripping the splines. Hope this helps.

It acts like its not getting enough pressure to the drive axles. Engine revs up and you will barely move. Put it in 4wd it then will travel

jack it up and check to see if your brakes are dragging. also check the hyd reservoir under the seat to see if it is full.

I agree with Aurthuritis. Is this a new model? Some folks are having trouble with them after a fluid and filter change because the incorrect reservoir is being refilled .Check that before driving it anymore as the transmission fluid could be low. collie

Thanks guys...I took 24 hrs to let the oil drain down to the lowers. It's been 3-4 mo. since the change. I think it's an 07 or so the only tanks under the seat is the window cleaner and power steering tank. I read somewhere that there are brass plates, friction I assume that can go bad...or a valve no opening/closing

At that many hours, I'd jack up the rear, and rotate the tires by hand to see what is going on. Check the ujoints this way too. They may have some wear. This is also a way to check the bearings and also what Milkman said. I am just eliminating these areas. bordercollie

edit: On my 2005 900, I had a power steering reservoir and a radiator reservoir under the seat.. but I didn't have a window..

i suggest you look at the E brake cable to make sure it isn't binding. there shouldn't be any change in the tranny from 2wd to 4wd. like bordercollie suggests>>> jack up the rear first and check for binding then also check the front. does it roll on a hard level surface easy???

Good suggestions guys. As for the E brake, I know I have issues taking off even in 4wd if I forget and leave the E brake on.

Thanks for the suggestions..I'm going to get on it here in a bit. When trying to move forward in 2wd It seems to roll freely while the engine is revved up, just creeps like there is no pressure going through to where it's suppose to. There is no binding while trying to move, nothing holding it back besides no pressure.....unless it's in 4wd, then it will move. I'll get back to ya when I get it jacked up...thanks again fellas

Just drove it to the shop -500ft- in 4wd. I can feel a warble, if you will, in the rearend. Forgot my keys...am headed back

I took the LR tire off...turn axle, the RR tire turns opposite. I put a chunk of wood under RR to keep it from turning and I can still turn the LR with some effort, is this normal to still able to turn?

I don't think that is normal. it probably is a limited slip differential??? maybe someone else who has a 900 like yours could check theirs to compare. have you checked the oil in the diff with a magnet to see if there is any metal in the oil?

If the tires turn opposite like they are suppose to, would that rule out axle/u-joint problems? since it can pull itself in 4wd is it going to hurt anything to run it short distances?.....Thanks so much....I do plan on checking the oil.

I have never been in this predicament before.. but how does the shift lever feel ? does it go in gear or is it floppy? You may want to check the cable going from the back of the shift lever to the transmission. I wonder about the shifting fork being messed up..This can cause similar problems..if it is broke or bent.
If your ujoints were going out, you would be able to see a hesitation there at the joint /shaft as you manually turned or rocked the tire back and forth.( with it jacked up in the rear) .Try it with the brake on too. In my case of bad joints, the shaft would hardly move and the I was really rocking the wheel . Looking at the joint visible, I could see that was where the freeplay was.. in the bad joint.
I'm a worry wart and wouldn't drive it, no more than necessary, if it were me, because something isn't right and I wouldn't want to make it worse. If you have to use 4wd, to make it move , then the rear wheels aren't taking their share of the load. That a lot of pressure on the front end then. just my thought though. bordercollie
edit: There is talk in the manual about checking the charge pressure. on the troubleshooting list. I don't have the knowledge on that. I definitely would check that transmission fluid.and make sure the filters were right.

agree that the u=joint would easy to see..how about the shaft going in to the bumper and out to hub...is there a spline in there that could be stripped, catching just enough to try to move?

I have been thinking about this^^^^ i would say that something is slipping either in the differential"could be the limited slip plates are degraded from wrong fluid" but the owner says kubota fluid was used so it shouldn't be this. that leaves the above mentioned post. you need to identify if the axle is slipping in one of the hubs.
