I don't think that is possible. The work shop manual for the x series has you pulling both the engine and transmission at the same time. On the X series you can pull the hydrostat off of the transmission whereas the pre x models the hydro unit was interregnal to the transmission.

I didn't see which model you have. The 4x4 mechanism is all gear driven on the X series, I am not sure on the older models. The driveshaft to the front differential is about $600. I am having a hard time imagining why the 4x4 would pop out of gear.
