2009 RTV 900 - Help identify front driveline noise

Greetings all-

Picked up a 2009 RTV900 with low hours (400), and working through maintenance and some other items.

I've got some front driveline noise when in 2WD. In high range, over 18mph, there is quite a rattle. I put it into 4WD, the rattle is gone.

I have the newer 1 piece CV style axleshaft, (is that the right word? the shaft that runs from engine/trans up front) and it looks intact. Also my front CV driveshafts seem intact. When in 2wd, tugging on the front left CV driveshaft there is a little movement. This also seems to be where the noise is coming from. Put it into 4WD....movement on that CV driveshaft is gone.

The machine is very clean for its age, it seems to have sat a lot. Where would you start looking?

Thanks

This may help

I used that idea on my 2005 2 pc shaft. If I remember right, it involved adding a piece of rubber hose to act as a damper between the 2 pc haft and the joint . The single piece is different . I no longer have my last 2011 RTV so would try jacking it up and wiggling everything by hand.

I agree bordercoolie. He did a rubber hose or washer to act as a damper. I also believe he drilled a hole and used a set screw in the drive shaft yoke

I am not sure, the hose or rubber washer was to stop a lot of movement.i think the post said he got a new drive shaft also and it still made noise until he did mod

Make a rubber washer out of 1/8 or 3/16 thick silicone, you can buy it in sheet's on Amazon. Make the hole in the center the OD - (slightly smaller) of the front spline that slides into the front Differential, OD about 1/2 larger. This dampens the rotating velocity of drive shaft from wobbling and banging and bottoming out in front yolk.
