clueless,

Myself, I take great care of my equipment. And those who has to pay out of their butts for them usally does........... and then you have those who are just "destroyers" by nature.

Now, I do believe everywhere in this world, they do harbor the so called equipment destroyers. We have them down here also in the south, (oh boy, do we have them). Now, that I've got this statement behind me, I can say this......
Never, and let me say, there is a big batch of these RTV's in the hands of destroyers in the south. I have never seen a RTV busted down by a destroyer. They are the ruff & tuff on their machines, they could tear up a steel handled railroad hammer. They run the heck out of the machines, never seem to service them, crap just thrown over in the back, they will run smooth over anything in the path of the RTV, and so on, and so on......
But they never cripple the RTV's. The RTV's are just damn tuff.

My question is, what in the name of God, are these people there doing to thier RTV's? For I can't imagine some of the things I hear going " wrong " with the machine.

they are working on gas line rite of ways through the mountains.they are always in a hurry!when they dont pop out of gear easy they just pull down on the handle as hard as they can.the mud they run in they dont clean it out from around the moving parts, and it tears stuff apart! the half shafts on the rear the space around them was packed with mud,it literally took me an hr or more to steam the mud off it so i can work on it! the places up here dont have any place to clean the equipment off and heaven forbid an operator or laborer pick up a shovel or something to clean the mud off the rtv! the rims inside are packed with mud.wish they would let us take pictures of the stuff!the boss's see it,but how far does it go from there,i dont know.

Boy this sounds soooo familiar. We had 4 rtvs go out to a jobsite with winches installed. Big mistake. All 4 came back with broken winch cables and various other problems. What sticks out in my mind is, what do you have to do to break the cable on a 3500 lb rated winch that is mounted on these rtv's? We plead with our boss to start holding these jobs accountable, in some cases we can some we can't. Oh well guess it's job security for us.

I bet they would take better care of 'em if they were paying for them. Reasons like this is why you buy used only from an owner with maintenance records and a cared for machine. Hrs shouldn't matter on these engines with a handled properly machine. My '05 had wear and tear((u joints replaced by me and dry rot boots etc) used zero oil, and it had over 4024 hrs on it when I sold it. I had a waiting list ready to buy based on service record and pictures alone). I've never broke so many hearts in one week when I told them they lost it. ;)
If my wheel joints gets caked with mud, you can bet I'll be using my hands to dig it out if I have no other options. bordercollie

We think that they were using the winches to "snatch" one another out when they got 'em stuck. Like so many have done with chains.
We are entertaining the idea of installing the coast valves on our botas. I think it could help the wear on the rear axles (u-joints, axle plate splines, etc). Quite an expense though considering the total number of units we have. Oh well gave my opinion to the ones who make the decisions, up to them now.

I would think a coast valve would actually increas u-joint wear, you will be loading and unloading them more often wouldn't you?

just wish they would take there time with them, and ease them out of gear, instead of using Armstrong method to get them out of gear!the forks are not that bad to change, just time consuming to get the motor/trans out.

the cleaning part, well, you got to have a site boss who will enforce it,seems none of them do this.but maybe, some day when they see how much this year was spent on them, they might do something about it..

oh well, now to order $1500 worth of parts for them.

Instead of an explicit install of the coast valve, can't the existing be adjusted? There was a thread on the subject about a year ago.

You companies best investment may be the setup that's used on the school bus. A camera in a box sitting on the ROPS behind the driver. The view is enough to see who's driving, the operator area and the view out the front. If the drivers think or know how they drive these things is being watch, they may change their "technique".

Do you think they play tug of war with em if they have winches? :yum:
Could happen!

One of the legends we heard in Peace Corps training - some 40 years ago - was early PC volunteers out in the boonies somewhere who tore the transmission out of a government Wagoneer. Turns out it was hitched back to back with their other Wagoneer in a towing contest when it broke.

And, we were told, that's why no more vehicles were ever issued to PC volunteers anywhere.

thought about that, but they would break that off also!!they are brutal on equipment!

but on a lighter note, parts order was decent. got 90% of my other parts in,the head went out to get valves and springs put in it.hope it will be back later today so i can get that one done!

thought i had the fork for the other one,but had the wrong one. seems the same one gets broken!but oh well, tomorrow is another day!

When you have the cover off the top of the trans, and the forks and rods exposed, could you snap a photo and post it on this website? I posted some vague instuctions for putting the forks back in place but without photos they're even more vague...

(I know it's a pain in the ass to upload photos and post them. You could also email them to bczoom or twoguns and they can load them - he's got it down. @bczoom - like you need more to do...)

No problem for me to upload pics for y'all. Just send me a PM requesting my e-mail address.

best thing is i got the workshop manual, with great pics,it might be coming home with me tonight. ill see if i can scan them and make a pdf file out of them.

it is simple to change forks, just time consuming!

best thing is to go to messicks websitehttp://www.messicks.com/ and have them send you the parts breakdown of the trans/range section. it will give you a pretty good idea of how things are put together, and give you a idea on prices of the parts needed.you can get all the parts breakdowns on your vehicle, just make sure you put in the correct model of your machine,rtv900w and the rtv900w6 have different parts for each. trust me,been there before!

have the pages scanned to put forks back in.bad thing is they are 3 seperate scans, wish i could put all 3 together, but cant figure out how right now. if someone knows how to let me know i will send them to you and maybe someone can post it.

@clueless - If you click on the name of the poster a little menu will pop up. One of your choices will be to send a private message. You might try that and see if you can attach the scans to the message. Thanks for taking the time to scan the pages.

ill have to see if i can upload them to someplace, like webshots or something like that.thats all that is in the private message stuff.

oh well, later. got a LOT of work to do!
