Mainly, I watched the political process as people demanded some relief from pollution, lobbyists proposed solutions that made them money, and all that finally resolved into the California-only model gas engines etc. The air got a lot better.
Aside from transportation - heaters that use recycled motor oil or simple cast iron woodburning stoves are no longer sold, paint and paint thinner have evaporation standards, backyard trash burning and large-scale ag burning are severely restricted, and there are a lot of other restrictions on what you can put into the air to bother your neighbor. But I don't know more than what you see on the national news.
