I know most of you who post are knowledgeable, so I'm not addressing you specifically.....

When you engage the differential lock, you MUST be sitting still and the tires MUST NOT be spinning.

This may sound like common sense, but I just got done doing a full replacement of the differential gears in a Kubota BX22 tractor. This has the exact same diff lock that the RTV has. The BX diff lock was engaged several times at speed. There are four3/8"pins, three had been broken off. These then lodged between the axle gear and the cage, causing severe damage. I replaced the cage, all of the spider gears (three had at least one hairline crack each), bearing surfaces under the idler gears, and the diff lock itself.

It tookmany hours to do the R&R. Easily five, perhaps a bit more, was spent cleaning parts, including the interior of the axle housing. The most cleaning time was spent clearing mud from the externals of the trans and frame. Final cost will be hundreds of dollars in labor, and several hundred in parts.

We installed the new diff lock, and at the owners request, disabled it. I've removed the linkage, and locked the diff lock out. This is the second time he's done this, so he figured it was time to remove this feature. I told him that with the BX backhoe and font loader, he should be able to get the machine out of any situation, no need for the tires to do the work. The RTV doesn't have the luxury of hydraulic arms (YET!!) so spare yourselves the headaches!!
