driving in snow.

Ok so I just got my new tires mounted.. and read about all of you driving in snow.. so I decided to try it out.[:D] You guys are either driving in soft "pretty" snow.. or stuff that is not very deep. [*-)]

I tried an area near my driveway.. It was not nearly as deep as everywhere else I have. I only got the back wheels a couple of feet off the driveway... and it was stuck... and unless other tires happened to be 4 ' tall .. it is not the tires.

The snow was firm enough that I semi floated for a moment.. then when it had plowed enough.. it did not want to move forward anymore...so the tires just started digging.. until they were all kind of hanging in the air. [:'(]So I had some shoveling to do.

The tires do seem to workgood on my icy driveway. I h ave a short steep section and it spun some but I stopped on it and did make it up in two wheel drive [not locked] with the turf.. I had to go to 4 wheel and rear locked.

So Jamie you keep wishing you could come up here and play in the snow...don't come this far north... real snow will definately stop this machine. [:D][not that I expected otherwise... so I am not disapointed]

If my mental picture of your condition/situation is correct, you went belly up. Is that correct? If so, I don't think any kind of tire could help you. Once the tires are off the ground, that's it...

Also, if you're semi-floating, it sounds like you have a lot of ice in the upper level of the snow.

My post was supposed to come off as a funny story...and to maybe lessen Jamie's disapointment about not being able to play inthis stuff[:D]

Yes I was very belly up.. and yes as I said it was not a tire issue.. for they were not touching the ground.

there was some icy layers in there but mostly it was just very dense snow.. dense enough to hold the machine up off the ground. While we can have fluffy snow.. here we go through a lot of freeze thaw cycles.. so snow settles and gets firm.

I never expected to be able to take this machine into the woods..this time of year anyways...so no disapointments.

I would not head out into the woods right now with anything less than a large skidder.. with chains.

Phew,

You had me nervous there. I see you just mounted your Bighorns and I was afraid you thought they sucked...

You nervous, I was cross-eyed, for a moment, just about had me a liking this mud again >>>> thinking," that poor feller ", done spent all that money, and he is stuck !!!

Yep, and he doesn't even have his winch installed to pull himself out?!?!?

Hammerhead, I did the same thing when I mounted my BX's. One foot of old Maine snow is the RTV's limit. I don't know if the Southern boys will understand this but, you must get stuck or you won't have a good Maine woods story to tell! Don't Eat the Yellow Snow!!!!!

Ez chair... I was afraid you were going to tell my your bx tires were floating on top and not sinking in at all [:)]

yes this stuff needs to be experienced to understand.

a week ago out snowshoeing with friends.. the guy breaking trail hit a soft spot..sank up to his mid back [with snowhoes on[*-)] ]

I remember back when I was stationed in 29 Palms [southern Ca.] People were talking about how hazardous the driving was after a sand storm... with all that slippery sand on the road. I would tell them in the winter we put sand on the road for traction... they did not belive me???

Hey, I've been there... Although we called it "29 stumps"
USMC - HMLA/269 - Huey's and Cobra's - '82 - '86.

Put a set of these on and laugh at the deep snow. I have since this pic was take added a set of doors that I built.Darn I had a pic here before I edited it but now its gone. It was showing my tracks.

Yes this thread really needed to go in this direction.. for that does seem to be the answer... tracks. [:)]

I am not going that way... in the near future anyways.. for I am still working at buying my other goodies for the machine. I also don't have a real need to be in the woods this time of year.

If I had unlimited money.. I would maybe get them so I could groom my ski trails... but I would also have to see a few more winters with decent snow before I did that.. [this has been our first winter in some time with a bit of snow.

I myself would also need to better understand any problem there might be with running tracks.

but yes with those I would not have gotten stuck the other day..

oh... do you have any pictures of your new doors?

thanks glenn

No door pic's yet, butI can get some. They are made from lexan, Alu and a few pop rivets. Latches on the inside of the roll bar post.

Deerlope,

That sure is a nice looking machine. How much snow can it handle? I know powder vs. heavy wet stuff makes a difference. Just wondering what they are capable of.

Matt

All I can say Matt is that nothing has stopped it yet this year. When the Noreaster hit in Dec and then we got the other 12 inches on top of the 18 we already had it just kept on trucking in 2 wheel drive with the differ locked. Now thatit isall hard and frozen I just go in 2 wheel drive and no locked differ. We are getting ready to start making maple syrup and I plan on useing it to haul all the sap.

Sounds great! I can see how they would extend the use of your machine greatly, especially in these northern parts where deep snow can remain in the woods 'til Spring.

Like to see them in action some time. I'm sure there are some videos out there.

Matt

I don't have any video but mine has been plowing through 2 feet of dry Utah powder. It seemed to be ok, but when I made the 90 degree turn that's where I got stuck. Luckily the snow was dry and easy to shovel but absolutely would not pack down.
